I'm VERY reluctantly doing this. I've only just bought it off MikeC, but unfortunately it's just a touch too big for me :(

It's a 1994 Orange C16R that has been professionally 'singlespeedified' and resprayed in a gorgeous shade of Orange (what else?) by Argos. The original rear dropouts have been removed and replaced with horizontal singlespeed-only ones.

Ideally I'd like to swap it for a slightly smaller (17-18") bike, either singlespeed or geared.

Failing that, I'd like £250 (posted) for it, as that's what I paid for it just over a week ago!

Kit (as far as I can remember without venturing out to the shed) is:

Frame - 19" C16R, converted to singlespeed
Forks - Orange F7
Headset - LX

Stem - Syncros
Bars - Unbranded Flat
Grips - Syncros

Brake Cantis - LX (pads are virtually unused)
Brake Levers - Kona Curve, mint

Seatpost - Orange
Saddle - Orange "Angry Orange"

Front Hub - Hope, black
Rear Hub - DMR Revolver, Black
Rims - Mavic X221, black
Spokes - Sapim
Tyres - Conti Vapor

Sprocket - 19T (I think, MikeC will correct me if I'm wrong!)
Cranks - Truvativ Stylo
Chainring - Goldtec 32T singlespeed specific
Pedals - XTR SPD (note - these are seized into the cranks)

I think that's it! As I said above, I'd prefer to swap it than sell it, to save myself selling the bike and then spending the money on something else!

Love the bike, I'd think about a swap but my frame is the same size.
I've got a '92 Orange Prestige 19" that I have made singlespeed (with a tensioner) however I'd like to do similar to you i.e. replace original rear dropouts and replaced with horizontal singlespeed ones. How did you sort this? How much did it cost? Help?

Hiya,

I bought the bike from MikeC on here. From memory, he had the bike 'singlespeedified' by Argos (http://www.argoscycles.co.uk). They whipped the original dropouts off, and replaced them with the horizontal ones. They also removed a couple of cable guides at the same time, before spraying the bike the colour it is now.

I don't know how much it cost though, I'm afraid. You'd be better off asking him yourself - he's very helpful :)

Alternatively you could get in touch with Argos directly. You're welcome to send them a picture of mine as a reference if you like :)

Hope this helps!

If it's just a touch too big for you (and an 18" frame is only going to be half and inch or so shorter in the top tube anyway) why not try it with an inline seatpost and a shorter 70-90mm stem first?
I find it an advantage for singlespeeds to be long in the top tube anyway - that way you can use a sensible stem length (as above) without it feeling cramped whenever you're out of the saddle, and on a singlespeed you're out of the saddle far, far more than on a geared bike.

Also, with the shorter stem, try wide (660mm) low-rise bars. As you'll be out of the saddle so much of the time a more upright position works far better IMHO. You need to be able to feel that you can just "lope" your way uphill.

Just my ramblings anyway.....

Stick with the vertical dropouts and fit a Forward Components eccentric BB. No frame changes needed, easier wheel removal and replacement. Quality stuff too.

I actually just went out for a spin on it again, and it's not too bad. I think it'll just take a bit of getting used to.

Perhaps i just wasn't used to the extra length (coming from a 14.5" 4X GT Frame!). However I think I'll try to get hold of a shorter stem and inline post, just to see if it makes enough of a difference.

I'll keep the bike up for sale/swap for now though, just in case someone comes along with a 17" Kona :):):)

Aw, come on guys it's a lovely bike!

I'm thinking of splitting it now - I'd like to gauge the interest first so if you've got your eye on anything, let me know.
