1994 Kona Explosif

I've checked the Kona catalogues and I must have had it re-sprayed in '97 as that was the gold year. The attached is from the '94 catalogue and shows the explosif in green. Mine was basically exactly as this but in Burgundy. I bought it as a frame only so that maybe the reason for the different colour.

It's difficult to tell from these photos, but I would say this is probably a 1995 Explosif, made of Columbus Max. The colour would have been burgundy and gold, as you report, it would explain the lack of a fluted downtube and it looks as though it may have the distinctive overlapping of the top tube around the seat tube - you could provide more pictures to confirm that and the bi-ovalised tubes.

It would have looked as this one

There are no crud catcher mounts on the 94 Explosif either, but they could well have been fitted when the frame was repainted.

The crud mounts were fitted at the time of the respray. You might be right about 95 my memory aint what it was. Having sadi that the new year models are always on the market before the actual year anyway.

Incidentally the frame I pictured was apparently sold for $80 in desperation and whilst drunk, so as to provide funds for further poker, which were then lost before going home. Until now, that was the cheapest Columbus Max Explosif frame I had heard of.
