Thanks folks. I've upgraded some wore out parts and added a chain guide since then.

I've manged to get a V brake to work with a pipe system like that - if you get a V-noodle, then the cable guide ferrule can be removed and fitted to the pipe end on the frame to take the upper end of the cable outer for the V-arm.
