1993 Kona Explosif New Project

Re:

That is the ugliest BB I’ve seen in a long while! Cups look like alloy though, so strong caustic soda will dissolve them and leave the BB threads in tact. Make sure you’ve got adequate PPE if you’re going about it this way and flush the frame well afterwards.

Re:

I’ve been Carefully grinding it with a dremel and I’m nearly through the non drive side cup. The titanium drill bits didn’t work well. I keep doing a bit and leaving A bit for a while so I don’t get too frustrated!
Another 1/2 hour on it and I should be through.
Thanks for the soda tip. I did think about caustic soda but thought better of it as I know how nasty it is.
If I fail with the grinder I’ll definitely try the soda though.

Re:

I took the plunge and invested in some caustic soda. The reaction is pretty Explosif (pardon the pun) but seems to be working well in dissolving the aluminium cups.
Thanks for the suggestion, I wish I’d done it a week or two ago.
Hopefully the bottom bracket will be out in the morning.

I considered this bike myself, but didn't need another bike that's too small for me.
Looks like it'll be very satisfying once all the hard work is done and you hopefully end up with a peach!

Re:

Success! There is some thread damage which may well have been there already as it was way deeper into the bb than I got.
I’ll drop it at the lbs to get them chased out.

Well the threads are fine so I’ve taken it and had the paint stripped. I’m just waiting for the paint to arrive and will nib it over before giving it a couple of coats of primer.
I’ve bought some black and silver metallic Montana gold paint which came up well on my last project.

Re:

Bit of an update. Paints arrived today along with a hub and wheel. I’ve swapped the hub into the wheel and will get g thy he frame degreased and primered Over the weekend hopefully.
A couple of ‘naked pictures:

Re:

I gave it a couple of coats of primer today. I’ll let it harden and flat It and see if it needs another coat or not.
