1993 khs montana pro UPDATE 13/3/10

I'm loving this thread. I was very keen on the KHS Montana pro and comp bikes back in the day and seeing your build brings back the memories. Excellent work.

This bike stood the test of time, -it still looks gorgeous. Mind you I never rode one. Does it ride as well as it looks?

Cheers dude. I've only had a few rides and i'm having a few issues with the steering but thats a build problem rather than a frame problem. Tonight ride had a slight improvement. Seems to climb nicely feels right if you get me.it will be a sad day if i ever have to part with it. Thanks for the interest

there was a dude riding a khs montana in a similar colour on the GYBR Wetherby-Filey that i saw a few times. Looked fairly minty & also original bits by the looks... should've taken a photo eh? not sure if it was a pro though, the KHS logo on the seat-tube was very different.

a few changes have been made. firstly the stem/ steerer adapter combo has been swapped for a zoom quill stem courtesy of crud. the zoom is ideal as it is a reasonable length and rise so it is comfortable without fitting risers and it is also the correct stem for the frame. i am one step closer to my catalogue rebuild!

last week i swapped the headset for a roadie stronglight. it is certainly light - had huge concerns that the cups would crumble as i wound down my home brew headset press. it slid in nicely after some gentle persuasion. the forks seemed to hold the key to the odd handling. there was another metal ring under the crown race so perhaps it interferred with the crown race. anyway its all adjusted nicely now. i am just waiting a week to make sure i am comfortable with the position before i probably remove the spacers and lop the top of the steerer off. (and then probably regret it)

also swapped the saddle for an old skool flite

i'm really enjoying this bike. this is as close as i have to a picture of it at the minute!

more changes but no pictures yet. swapped the cheap heavy wheels for a set of deore dx hubs and bonty rims. rolls a little better now.

also i'm considering swapping the dia compe brakes for a set of ritchey logic cantis i have just gought. reason being, i am in love with ritchey logic cantis! they are the most beautiful cant ever!

been for a couple more propper rides on this set gear set up. around my local area i can manage and the grae combo feels right but i really struggle around my parents so i am going to try an 18 tooth sprocket next time.

managed to strip a thread in the tensioner last night so i am on the lookout for a replacement, or i might have a go at making my own

alterations are syntace carbon bars with a comfylicious 8 degree sweep and an easton carbon post (cheers to woldranger). i have swapped the tensioner for a more burley da bomb roller tensioner fron forum member ctk.

i also changed the onza ules grips for my all time favourite ritchey wcs foam.

the rear psycho has been swapped for a panaracer smoke to allow a bit more clearance

next change will be the brakes. i have a set of ritchey logic cantis waiting in the wings.

on the lookout for a dart in amberwall for the front

nice! I picked up a near all original Summit Comp with full Exage for 50quid from ebay a couple of weeks back - lovely True Temper frame, looks very similar to the Pro - is it the same frame? A 91 or 2 I think. Anyway, mine's for commuting so will be slicked-up & destickered soon
