1993 khs montana pro UPDATE 13/3/10

Are you using a sprocket-and-two-spacer kit at the back? If so, the sprocket will be aligned with a chainring in the middle ring position, but yours is in the outer ring position. Having the ring on the inside of the spider looks worse but may well work better :)

Cheers for advice guys. The spacers on the rear are one thick one and the rest are salvaged from an old cassette i stripped. I did this so i could finetune the chainline as i wanted the ring in the outer position. Is there a way to measure chainline or is it by eye? Should i pay a visit to uncle sheldon!

just looked at the back of the bike. looking from above the wheel i have the thick spacer from the kit closest to the spokes, then the sprocket, then the series of thin spacers. from what you say this is set to run in line with the middle ring. if i add a spacer the thickness of the spider on the crank then it should all line up. i'll get me tools...

i run some string from the top of the chainring to the top of the sprocket . if you weave it over the teeth it can be pulled taut

lie on the floor behind the bike while holding the string tight and eye the sprocket with the chainring at the top along the string and the bottom teeth too . you might need to be far way to see both the top and bottom run of teeth

its a lot easier to do without the chain on . you could eye the teeth without the string but it helps a lot with it

if you get it near and look down from the top you usually can see the
teeth biased in the chain links just to get the final touch

use a roller for a tensioner if you can

right i think all is running well now. i'm off for a couple of short rides tonight with my dad and the mrs so it can get a gentle shake down. HOPEFULLY it wont end in pain. this is all assuming my dad has a 2.5mm allen key so i can adjust the headset.

are they considerably better? i used this tensioner mainly because it was cheap (thanks longun!)

When youre ready pm me about a zoom stem and steatpost to finish it off with as I'm splitting my KHS now !

maiden voyage last night. just did about 3 or 4 miles with my dad. chainline issue seems to be resolved now i have respaced the sprocket.

first hill of the ride is a gentle gravel slope about 1/2 a mile and i immediatly resented the set up but by the time i was at the top i realised it wasnt too bad at all.

in just 1 short ride i can see how different it would have been on a geared bike. i did one longer, steeper hill wehere normally i would pretty much give up and drop through the gears. on this bike i tried to keep the cadence up and battled a bit harder.

really happy with the set up, just need to resolove the dodgy steering issues now...
