1993 khs montana pro UPDATE 13/3/10

Kooka cranks on a singlespeed. Don't stand up!

I always like the True Temper decals right smack dab on the top tubes of those older steel KHSs. Neat-o!

Are kookas a really bad idea? They are the only cranks i have that will fit the ring..

looks mint dave, how did you get the tensioner working again, sorry i never replied to txt,was well busy earlier at work.

Not entirely a bad idea, everyone's desk needs a paperweight.

looks like i'm mot going to get a straight answer then!

chris - used a few rear mech bits and bobs and managed to secure it tight to the frame. not sure if it will keep tension like that though. i assume the part of the chain with the most stress will be the top run between the sprocket and the chainring so it shouldnt pull the pensioner down. was it running the other way on your GT? ie pulling down?

Kooka cranks break. Kooka stuff in general, breaks. First Generation 385gm arms, 405gm arms, Second Gen arms, Forged arms...doesn't matter. They are pretty, fragile, boutique items. It's not really a secret. If you are going to put anything resembling hard miles on a single speed, and you want the CNC machined look for your cranks, then find some Race Face Turbines, and run them with the granny ring bolts installed.

Kooka cranks are pretty, but pretty won't sew up the hole in your calf when the non-drive arm breaks at the bottom bracket. ;)

thanks for clearing that up. wasnt (un?)fortunate to have kookac back in the day so didnt realise they are prone to breaking.

some nice shiney period correct xt cranks arrived today so i'll heed your warning and swap them over.

thanks

Nice work fellah  think the XT cranks will be the very cherry, the only thing I would change would be the stem. Is this your first foray into singlespeed?

Yes first singlespeed bike. Hoping it will improve my fitness.

After the advice above i have removed the kookas and fitted some period xt,s that arrived yesterday. Only problem now is that the freehub is making some odd noises!

Ref the stem, i agree it lets it down and i'm not sure about the saddle either. Due to budget constraints i'm making do until i find a silver zoom which it would have come with originally.

heres the pic with the xt's. i'm pretty happy with it so far, just need to get out on it!

i am thinking that if i enjoy single speed i will convery my fire mountain eventually as i fully intend to do a catalogue spec build on this bike in the near future and i dont need too much more stuff to be honest.

at utahdog2003 - cheers for the advice ref cranks!!
