This is the build-story of one of the most iconic MTBs of the 90s. The 1993 Cannondale SV 3000 - a bike which many loved, and even more hated.
The bike has a fascinating story behind it, in terms of origins, technology, design, advertisement and the 10-year-long production run it initiated - I have written an article about it here in case you are interested.
The project started, as usual, with the hunting and gathering of the necessary parts:
During the assessment of the parts, I learned many interesting things about the 1993 version of the SV, including the surprising fact that it was astonishingly light. Much lighter than the following models, as a comparison between the frames of identical size between 1993 and 1994 show:
This is all because of a fundamentally different frame design, with butted and thinner tubed, which is hard to spot but amazing for any weight weenie (more details in article above).
The build itself is captured in this attempt at an SV ASMR video
The first version of the build is shown below: in this version, a feather-light 10,05 kg. Quite light for a full suspension bike, and with a few optimisations I can easily get it to 9,8 kg.
Much more important, though, is that it rides really well, essentially its a fast XC racer, and the non-active suspension is perfect for this kind of ride.
More pictures to follow once the build is finalised
