I don't know which way to go with a Trek 970 I have on the way, I have my commuter, have a full suspension MTB for trail and some trekking on the weekends.

I want this Trek to be just for exercising during the weekdays, so I was thinking either single speed with road bars and brake levers, rear mech only 7 speed or full gear MTB.

I want to keep the bicycle light, reliable and nice to ride. Don't say get rid of the Trek ;) , my commuter Trek 930 is a dream to ride.

Heres a picture, it is going to be powder coated white with black forks or all white,

Rear mech, massive front ring(48-50+). No point in fixed or single with vertical drops. You can only attain adequate tension with horizontal drops. Plus, where's the point! (Uh-oh, political!)

Single speed or 1x7 IMO. I see nowt "wrong" with a tensioner for s/s, altho' horizontals are obviously neater.

I've just done something similar with a large bontrager frame - that's running as a 1x8 in commuter/pub bike mode with 50 tooth front ring. It's currently fitted with moustache bars for that english gent look (pinched from one of the freight bikes I use) but I'm thinking of using drops in the near future :)

In my opinion SS is a bit of a waste of time if commuting, unless you're happy pushing one big gear or spinning like a madman, oh and keep the paint, I reckon it looks pretty cool as it is ;)

Commuter

Thanks for the props on the paint, I am going to wait and see how it is if I can just get away with some touch up then job done.

I already have a SS for a commuter, doesn't seem to be that annoying but I have gotten use to SS riding again since moving to Sweden. It also helped I BMX'd for 5 years when I was younger.

So I am feeling more the rear mech set up for this ride.

or try ss with a magic ratio, or a ghost gear. now ghost gears are cool. and they make people go  and :? and :D
