way way too big, a good few mm's i reckon. a double wrap of can, then folded over in half. so around a total of four complete revolutions. works like a charm

Good to hear. I have a similar arrangement on my roadie. I'm using a USE plastic shim to go from the frame's (allegedly) 27,2mm to the seatpost's 25mm, but it was slipping, so a single layer of Coke can sorted it perfectly.
 
I had a red 8000 years ago, I also remember the purple one....

Was it bought from city cycles on Rodney St??

Y'know, I think it was. ISTR the first thing I did was ride it up Arthur's Seat.
 
They were the main trek and gt dealer in edinburgh, how I remember lustig after the trek 9000 and gt rts they had on display!
