Ok, finally managed to get myself organised enough to build this up today and an initial shakedown ride in the local woods was everything that I hoped that it would be i.e. accompanied by malfunctioning freehub and a wish that I'd got a Kona instead

I've tried to keep vaguely period correct although definitely not factory spec i.e. the gunmetal stem is a couple of years too new but I had it lying around and, to me, it doesn't jar too much. I'm not sure exactly what year it is but those more knowledgeable than me suggest 1991 or 92 (now confirmed as 1992).

A proper shakedown ride in the Forest of Dean tomorrow.

Most certainly a 1992 model, frame material (91 = Ritchey, 92 = Tange as yours does), use of powder coating 'aka performance paints', the change in the red/yellow paint details where they meat, and placement of cable guides.

Anyways,
How long is that headtube anyway ?

Have a good ride and hope it holds up, hope you like it as it's just too big for me to buy of you if you don't.

Thanks for the info, a 92 it is.

I'll measure tomorrow as it's in the back of the car now.

As the next owner of those forks - make sure you take it easy on those perilous downhills on the morrow... ;)

With my trusty metal ruler it measured 161mm.

It held up fine although the gears were 'ahem' temperamental although I suspect that's due to lashing together three different chains to make one long enough.

I took it easy but not because you're having my forks ;)

Anyway, here's the bike post FoD today and I'm pleased to report that it was a credit to Rocky Mountain and a really sweet ride.

I notice that you couldn't afford a granny ring for this build, so do you have to get off and walk when you come to hills then Ed?

I wonder if we ought to have a whip round.

Nice looking Kona Ed, certainly one of your better builds for sure. although good to see some of the signature Edwards 'lash up'. Remind me to check the Rocky's serial number next weekend.

Granny rings are for the weak of mind and limb and absolutely not required as this quote from yesterdays FoD ride, the true christening of the Altitude, amply illustrates

And a very special thanks to Ed for pushing me along...mentally and pyhsically..( despite having no granny ring )
and the only whipping will be of your disrespectful arse ;)

Is the lash up related to the chain? If so, fair play.

And as for serial number hunting.......
