I bought this from it's original owner for $75 in 2017. This one had a rack, and full Deore LX in heavily worn condition. The bike looked like it had been ridden hard and put away wet for 10 years. Per usual, I stripped the bike down and sat on the frameset for a few years while I figured out what I wanted to do with it.

For a few years, I had a 1991 Explosif, that was just a bit too big for me. I decided that I would strip down that bike, swap over most of the parts onto the Cinder Cone, and sell the Explosif frame. I really didn't need two early black Kona frames. I'm so glad I did, as I got more out of the Cinder Cone once I completed the swap.

I also had recently acquired a 1995 Humu, that donated the silver Kona seat collar, dog collar, and brake perch. I decided I wanted to accent the all black frameset with all silver parts. I also went with a little bit of yellow as an accent color, which can be found in the Avocet saddle Kona badge, Kool Stop pads, Elite bottle cages, UMT-17 decal on the rims, and the factory Joe Murray logo on the P2 fork. I even used yellow zip ties to secure the cycling computer cable to the front brake cable housing.

Since I built up this bike, I have used it as a sturdy around town bike, errand runner, grocery getter, and loaner bike for when friends want to go for a ride with me. It is so versatile and comfortable!

I usually have a rack installed, and these reflective sidewall commuter tires, which really help in the dark. I also have a bunch of lights.

I've done a little bit of part swapping since I built the bike, including pedals, as sometimes I ride clipless. Recently, I swapped in the ST-M092 Servo Wave brake levers with IPC C-1 thumbie mounts.

If I were to do anything else to this bike, it would probably be either another wheelset with Smoke and Darts for off road, or a ControlTech seatpost. Maybe swap in an all silver Impact headset. For the most part, I am happy with where this bike sits in my stable, and I plan on keeping it as a loaner for friends for a long time.

Today, in preparation of submitting a BOTM entry, I swapped over some different bottle cages, to match the 91/92 green/purple color theme Kona had going on back then.

I also switched over to a pair of supple Scratch & Sniff tires that I think I pulled off of a '96 Fire Mountain SE. I also have a tan wall set of Mr. Dirt & The Cleaner, but the sidewalls are starting to become hard, I couldn't get the bead over the rim, and I didn't want to ruin the tires, so they went back in storage after a good cleaning. I like these Scratch & Sniff anyway, they match the other slightly newer Kona bits, and I don't have to feel bad about putting miles on them.

Also, top work on the cinder cone!
That shrine is impressive. I had a fold out '96 poster catalogue... Wish I still did.... Must check mum's loft.

Like your Kona homage wall👍
Thanks!
You mean shrine surely ........
It most definitely is a shrine, and don't call me Shirley.
If you're not using that humu....
It gets used weekly! It is one of the few I won't get rid of.

Thanks! The shrine is 5 years in the making, and I'm always looking for new bits to add. I just recently got that helmet cover. I wish I had a '95 poster catalog, one came up for sale on eBay a year or so ago, and I didn't win the auction. I think that '95 and '96 are my two favorite years.

Loving the latest build 😎nice Poly 61 too. It would appear we have similar taste 😁

Thanks! Would you believe I bought it for $5 at a yard sale? I think you can see the pink sticker to the left of "Korg Poly-61". Guy said nobody wanted it because "it didn't have built in speakers" 😂
