Do you mean a standard aheadset GT stem? If so the flip flop stem that's on at the moment can run with an aheadset as the quill is removable?

I do and thanks... never had a GT before so was a bit unsure of what stem it was, so has the bike got an aheadset on it? Sorry for silly questions!

No it hasn't it is a standard headset (whatever GT used back in 92). What they did though was used a double ended quill ( it has a wedge on both ends) that is completely separate to the stem.

In essence this means you could replace the headset with an aheadset... ditch the quill and use the stem and a star-fangled nut in the steerer to load the aheadset bearings.
