1992 Fire Mountain commuter - it's in bits

Re: 1992 Fire Mountain restomod

Thanks for the BB hamster - it arrived today, and it's now been fitted. Replaced the grease nipple as it was blocked, and cleaned and mocked up the cranks (need some bolts).
Tantalisingly close to being finished now:

You can't tell that the paint's faded in this photo - it looks a lot better than it is!

Re: 1992 Fire Mountain restomod

Looking very nice indeed - and the faded paint is important as it give a nice patina!

Ha - obviously not 'concours perfect' if you're leaning it directly up against a stone wall ...

Beautiful bike, for sure - a class act!!

Re: 1992 Fire Mountain restomod - finished, p2

This came to a sad end on my commute today - went to go round a stopped bus and couldn't see a taxi coming the other way. Couldn't stop in time on the greasy road, back wheel slid out and bounced off the front of the taxi. Both taxi and I were unhurt, the only victim was my rear wheel - badly bent and buckled.
As a student I just don't have the cash, time or skills for a new wheel build, nor is it really worth spending £60+ on a brand new 719, spokes and having it built up, when both wheels, the QRs and the Michelin City tyres were £50 all in, and it's not as if it's an Explosif.
My birthday is coming up in a month so I'm on the hunt for something similarly specced, (but a full bike as it's an all-round/commuter) at which point the poor Fire Mountain will be sold. I'll probably end up splitting it.
Everything remains as the spec in this thread but the rear wheel is toast.
Here's to my next bike...

Ouch ! , sorry to read about that mate and as long as your okay then that's what's important although it's a real shame about the FireMountain as it was looking really nice ..

Re: 1992 Fire Mountain restomod - finished, p2

I'm sure if you asked someone could help you out with a suitable rear wheel. If I had one you could have it. Glad your okay though.

Re: 1992 Fire Mountain restomod - finished, p2

It's taken me long enough to sort this out, but it's been an interesting few months at home and my bikes took something of a back seat. I ended up buying a 1996 Cinder Cone instead of fixing this, and I was commuting on it up until before the Christmas break. Now that can at last have a rest, and maybe this year it'll see some trails, after I sort out the mech, and maybe replace chain/cassette.

Anyway, I'm pleased to report that my commuter Fire Mountain is at last back in one piece with a new UN55 bb and rear wheel. (There was quite a bit of flex in the back of the frame when tightening the qr skewer - should I be worried?)
I like the silver wheel, goes well with the green.

Re: 1992 Fire Mountain commuter - it's back

It's good to see the old Kona up and running again  and when you say their was a lot of flexing on the frame when tightening qr skewer what part of the frame was it flexing at exactly as it seems to me that you've either got a fracture in the frame or a weld and my guess is that the issue is the weld has gone where the chainstay meets the bb on the drive side of the frame but hopefully i'm wrong and you've just imagined it's worse than it actually is ;) .

I would suggest you get a friend or family member to flex the rear triangle while you check it over at the welds ..
