so, remember how i just five days ago said that i had to force myself not to buy any new bikes?
well... i guess i am weak for cool projects.

it's a mid nineties Scott AFD 902!


Not a lot of info about it around the web, but it seems it was Scotts top of the line carbon fiber bike frame from around 94-96 (aluminium lugged of course)
the frame was in such good condition i just couldn't help but give it a polish, a fresh BB, and put it together with a 600 groupset i had left over from one of the daccordis.

it rides really good - super comfy, and surprisingly not noodly feeling at all.
unfortunately its a bit to small for me - (i am flexible enough to ride it comfortably on the hoods, but the drops end up being a bit to low), so i'm gonna have to see if one of my lower height friends want it.

The new 103mm bottom bracket arrived for the 7410 cranks arrived today.

So out with the too wide UN70...



and in with a new Token TK866CM



the 7410 cranks sure are a lot better looking then the 600 ones :mrgreen:

And it all turned out great!



The gearing-action feels so much better then the 600 groupset, and the whole thing just feels great.
i also changed the handlebars for some cinelli 65-38 track bars, which ergonomically goes very nice with these levers.

Just saw the Token TK866CM Ti axle bracket at over £100 - lovely kit though. I managed to get some old truvativ stock for my jobs also with aluminum alloy cups etc - but no carbon fiber! Still nice quality though and increasingly hard to find with sq taper

I am still regretting not buying a Eddy Mercxx SL frame and campag groupset when I had the chance at £350 but c'est la vie

The Daccordi is proving great fun and I need to remember to ride them as well as fix them (so far too much time in the shed!)
Not sure about Scotts italian pedigree - I trust you got a good deal

a Ti spindle just seems like such a unecessary choice to me compared to a steel one.
wont it just be softer and more mushy feeling when standing on the pedals?

i'd much rather just use a hollowtech BB and a modern groupset if weight saving was the goal, which is a bad goal for an old steel frame anyway

the scott was indeed a very good deal, and it's a shame it isn't my size, as it rides great.

and time spent in the shed wrenching on bikes is time well spent IMO, though not quite as fun as actually riding (just almost)

Took the Daccordi out for a spin today, and my god is the 7410 group a treat.
Both the front and rear shifts are super fast and buttery smooth - brakes are good and the cranks feels stiff and nice.
the cinelli 65 handlebars are also pretty goddamn great in my book - way more comfortable shape then the 64, and the 38cm width feels nice and aerodynamic.

The old cinelli a1 stem was not up to the task though, as the tightening bolt had been weakened over the years and snapped when i tourqed it to 22nm.
i fitted the deda murex from the other daccordi, but i think i will order a nitto pearl, as the murex looks a bit to chunky on this build.

the only problem now is that the new groupset has elevated this daccordi to such a level that i think i prefer it to the DA 7800 equipped one!
i'm gonna have to do a bit more comparing, but i might have to let the other one go, or rebuild it into something even more extreme neo retro... :shock:

yes the older dura ace groupset does look good on the frame - probably a more similar era so looks a bit more authentic - but I guess the newer set gives better shifting and another gear or 2?
Daccordi need a webpage for their old bikes/customers - it would be great to see how others are keeping the older frames going.

The real shocker is that the 7410 group shifts really, really, exceptionally well!
The group has virtually no wear, so the shifts are lightning quick with no delay up or down - even on the front rings.
The lever throw is super short, and has a really stiff and nice feel to it - it feels totally unrelated to the slightly sluggish 600 groupset.

i'd say the only thing the 7800 group is better at is having more gears, but so far i haven't felt the lack of gears to be an issue.
also, the 7410 really don't like crosschaining at all, so you have to use the front chainrings a bit more actively then with modern gears
its also easier to set up, compared to the 10 speed, which is always a bit finicky to get perfect, due to the short spacing between the gears.

Daccordi does run a fanpage on facebook, though its not super high traffic.
they are apparently working on an entry for historic models for their website though, which i'm looking forward to.

the green Paves aren't as classy looking as the tan Corsas, but they do have their own weird charm :mrgreen:
they ride great too - super comfy as expected, though the Corsas feel slightly faster when going all out on the flats (they are 27mm vs 25mm for the Corsas)

it's going to be hard deciding which wheelset to chuck on before going for a ride from now on
