1991 Peugeot 531Pro with 105

I picked this up yesterday - it's in super condition having stood in a dry garage for 15 years since it's last ride. It's almost all original - tyres and saddle are not but even the bar tape was the original stuff from 1991 (albeit knackered!)

It rides great and only needs some minor refurb:

- New bar tape
- I'll fit a shorter stem to suit me (it's actually a bit big for me really but I couldn't resist it!)
- New tyres as these have perished (I have some used 25mm GP5000's to go on there)
- Different saddle - the Vuelta fitted, although period correct, is excrutiating!
- Bottle cages

And thats all it needs - mechanically it's perfect

I've also ordered some Look Delta cleats to go on my 1980's Sidis that I still have so I can ride it in those! (the Look pedals on it seem to have never been used)

Here you go, a few more "before" images - as you can see, it's a bit grimy but under that everything is spot on - although this one is called 531 Pro, that's the model name rather than the tubing - it's regular 531.

The lugwork on this is lovely, really nice quality - there's an interesting thing with the headlugs, that I've never seen before - they have cutouts in the shoulders but not in the spearpoint - they have been filed though and are quite refined, which is a bit different to the earlier Aravis 531 Pro I had a few years back which in comparison looked a bit "thrown together" when you looked at the details -

Must admit, on a quick, overstretched ride around the block, it rides beautifully - lovely steel spring and nice and stable - typical 531 really! With some 25mm tyres on it should be perfect.

Oh yes, and look at that cassette! This was deffo someones race machine back in the day!!!

Shame about the original Pug branded stem. A white Rolls saddle would look good tbh.
I know what you mean - I'll keep it though, so if I sell it at some point I can refit it - I've ordered one that's visually very similar but obviously won't have the branding.......

A rolls or turbo would be ideal - I do have a black Turbo but it's got huge sentimental value (I won a big race, for me, on it in 1983 and it's one of a small number of parts I still have from the bike - I've got the campag brake levers and rear mech too - can't bring myself to use them on anything!)

I'll be keeping an eye out for something suitable but in the meantime a modern (comfortable) Prologo is going on as that's what I've got knocking about -

Love it. I've had a load of Peugeot's over the years and my favourite are this era - had a Peugeot Optimum and probably my favourite Pug!

Ok so stem turned up today so that’s been fitted, new bar tape, new saddle and (used) tyres now on there -

I also acquired some Look Delta plates and have dug my 80’s Sidis out - just been for a quick spin around the block and it’s lovely

No idea when I’ll use it, or indeed what I’ll use it for - maybe summer cafe rides - but it’s a lovely toy!

Apologies for poor pics - it’s dark outside!

nice 👍🏻, those sidi's look like ballerina shoes btw
Like most things from back then, we look back with rose tinted specs, then you discover that actually the stuff wasn't really that good! The shoes are not very comfy compared to my modern mavics, and the bike is nowhere near as comfy or efficient as my modern steel or carbon bikes - but yet the ballerina shoes and the noodly bike are still a joy - it's weird isn't it! 😂

The sidis look like slippers • the ONLY aspect i don't miss are the toe clips and straps ~ absolute torture as i remember them ! The thing i mostly miss was my racing clubs i raced for and the sheer ammount of races and time trials i was able to participate in. Cycle racing in the US is dead, except for gravel. gravel racing is dangerous because of the massive distance and lack of medical control imo. the old days were the best
