1991 Klein Attitude

hey BCSaltchucker, welcome to retrobike. nice to see another local BC guy on here.

you should probably start your own thread on your resurrection of this awesome score
of yours. that way you can document all the solutions you come up with on your journey.
we'll follow you there.
cheers

yes, sorry. I will start a new thread in March when I return to BC and can take some detailed photos. I'm just getting ahead of it now ordering the items I will need to get it looking close to (but not quite) OEM spec. So excited! I have been searching on and off 5 years for an Atti to buy.

Been busy dealing with reinstating bits of the decals, I found good success using some black nail polish followed by using a white sharpie paint pen

The large chunk of missing paint on top of the chainstay has been a bit of a struggle, I first tried sourcing magenta and neon red rattle cans, long story short, I was not happy with these attempts. I knew I had a clear Klein branded chainstay protector in the mail (the repop available on eBay) and had planned to apply it following an anticipated successful rattle can touch up process.

Following the failed touch up attempts I figured I could just use a black protector and move on. Not really what I was wanting but could do worse of course. Having black vinyl for decal cutting on hand I decided to cut one to see how it looked and it didn’t look too bad. It was my wife that suggested using red or magenta colored vinyl instead. Hmmm, that just might work I thought! 🤨

I tried both red and magenta, the red is not quite the same red but somehow it looks the best to my eyes, the Klein clear protector showed up and I applied it over the red vinyl, overall I’m really happy with the solution, kind of a custom red chainstay protector 😆

In the meantime I have made a couple key component swaps. I managed to get my hands on the IRD seatpost which originally came with the bike, originally the deal I made was for fuselage only. I think it really goes and well, it’s an IRD 😎 Nice that it may have been part of the bike either since new but if not, likely an upgrade made early on BITD.

And why not throw on some black on black Cooks? I think they really suit this build 👍

Thanks @baron von greenback

I can only recommend a version of my chainstay guard solution which I think could work for you. The ideal solution would be a spray touch up but it is beyond my skill level and likely many of ours.

Here is the Klein chainstay protector I recommend, I assume it’s a repop of what came stock on Klein frames BITD, note it is narrower along the length of the front half compared with the rear half due to the square profiled portion of the chainstay, the Klein logo is a nice touch I think.

We have a hobby store chain in Canada called Michaels which carries quite a few colors of vinyl rolls and less expensive small square sheets intended for cutters such as Cricut. Based on pictures I found online of Sea & Sky Kleins your paint is a mix of green & blue with green being on the top of the chainstay?

If you can find a good match you could just make a nice chainstay shape cut, stick on and be done with it. I’m not sure the vinyl would be strong enough to survive a ton of chain slap though.

If you combine it with the recommended Klein protector you could make a cut to match using the Klein protector as a template (I cut around the edges of the Klein protector within 1-2mm before doing this to achieve a good template) but then cut the colored vinyl 1-2mm smaller than clear protector to ensure it is slightly smaller than the Klein clear one.

Take good care to place them the same (nicely lined up with each other) and the result (I think) should look half decently official

Another note: I did try a smaller than full chainstay protector size piece of red vinyl and tried a version that was half magenta and half red, neither looked good, by doing a full length protector in a single color close to the frame paint it almost looks like it was meant to be
