1991 Kestrel CS-X Build - lots of weight weenies - Done pg 5

Re: The Ol'Kijiji Rabbit Hole ... 1991 Kestrel CS-X

Why not weigh the frame (accounting for bottom bracket). If it comes in under 3 pounds you've got yourself an EMS. Likely if it was there would be a decal somewhere on the frame(?).

Re:

That frame is sweet

Reminds me of the F1 frames made over this side of the pond – but that looks a lot shinier :D

Apparently the only way to tell them apart is the weight. Mine weighs over 3lbs without the BB so I don't think it's one. I doubt there are many left. I put the BB back in to make some measurements. It has a 22.5" top tube which has proven iffy for me. It's perfect on my '93 Brodie and not great on my '91 Blizzard. This should be fine provided the stem has a sniff of rise.

It's shiny! Kestrel did a nice job painting. Apparently they chip if you look at them the wrong way :?

I'll need to start weighing component combinations before it starts coming together.

Back to it ...

Shimano XT 737 175mm - 462g
Shimano XT 730 170mm - 521g
Shimano XT 730 175mm Powdercoated - 540g
Shimano deore MT60 170mm - 561g
Cook Bros CQP 177mm - 532g
RaceFace turbine 94bcd 175mm - 421g
RaceFace turbine 94bcd 175mm - 461g
*slightly different machining between the two RaceFace cranks above
RaceFace 110bcd non-clover 175mm - 453g
RaceFace 110bcd clover 175mm - 476g
Syncros Forged 170mm - 467g
Caramba Sidewinders 175mm - 510g
Topline 175mm - 373g

Missing info if anyone can help:
Suntour XCpro
Shimano XTR M900
Grafton/Topline compact 94bcd
* I have the last two but they are mounted on bikes

Anything else light and retro? 1991-93 vintage for this project.

Whatever the components, this is starting to look like my First Suntour XC Pro build. The weight savings over XT730-5 and M900 are substantial so far.

Re:

Was hoping this would fit. 1" not 1 1/8". Oh well ... Shall find another use for it.

Bontrager Racelite Bar/Stem combo - 380g!

Re:

Just a heads up as you start collecting bits...

I havent got it to hand so can't double check, but fairly sure my early CSX is 27.0 seatpost and not 27.2 like you mention in your parts breakdown...

Lovely frame by the way - feel free to send the 231 rims my way if I'm correct in seatpost sizing and therefore have saved you wasted efforts...

:)

Cheers,
Tom.

You sent me running downstairs to look. I got the 27.2 American Classic Ti post with it.

It's listed as 27.2 in that mag review.

I got my posts and calipers out and checked. A 27.0 has a bit of play and the 27.2 is a bit tight. It measures 27.12 ... Perhaps mine was reamed?

Re: 1991 Kestrel CS-X Build - lots of retro weight weenies listings
