1991 Giant Coldrock frame specs?

10bpm

Retro Newbie
Hi!

I found someone selling a cheap Giant Coldrock frameset online. It is my size and it is a very beautiful pink and purple frameset from 1991, I think. I am thinking about rebuilding it and using it as a "low tech" touring bike. I have a question that I would like to answer before buying it, but I can't find the info in any catalogue or thread, so maybe you can help me :)

Does someone know if the head tube is oversized (fitting 1 1/8" headsets) or not (fitting 1" headsets)?

Thanks a lot guys!! :)

I have a slightly newer '92 Coldrock which is my work bike. Very old school MTB frame with a horizontal top tube! The Cromoly 4130 tubing gives a good reasonably comfy ride on the road with plenty of clearance for guards and a 4-point rack. The longish wheelbase of 42.5" of my 19.5" frame makes the ride quite stately :). Mine has a 1" threaded headset, the seatpost size is 26.6, rear dropout spacing is 130mm. The rear dropouts look different on mine with obvious rack and mudguard eyelets. I don't think these bikes are worth that much. Not sure how cheap the bike you have seen is but I paid £5 for my complete bike which also needed some work. Yours definitely needs work and as such I would advise against paying too much for an incomplete bike as the costs to make good will add up! At the very least yours will need a saddle, seatpost, transmission / wheels / cables / brakes overhaul, pedals, tyres and tubes. Then you have possible seized components such as cranks /BB etc to deal with. Good luck!
