1991 Diamond Back Axis

A lucky local find this week. It’s not done many miles at all. I can’t find any chips/dents/scratches/rust on the frame or parts, just needs a good clean and some rusty bolts replacing.

I’m going to remove the Avenir Brahma Bar and Ritchey stem as they are not correct for this model year. I’ll replace with the brochure correct Tioga T Bone and Avenir Handlebar. The Brahma bar was fitted when the original owner purchased the bike new, the 1992 Apex and Axis had these fitted as standard and he wanted a set putting on this 1991 model, which he bought in the sale when the new models arrived in the shop.

It’s been fitted with Tioga City Slicker road tyres, so I’ve ordered a set of (reissue) Panaracer Smoke tyres (which the bike was fitted with from the factory) which should finish it off nicely.

Awesome!! I’ve got a 91 Apex I’m gathering the parts to restore atm! They truly are great bikes! But an axis is definitely the top dog! Nice find

Thank you, I know the ‘92 Apex and Axis came with Smoke front and rear… You might be right re the Dirt Dawgs… I’ll check in the morning, the 1991 brochure is on this site, but I can’t get it to load on my phone for some reason.

Either way, there is a set of smokes in the way for this one, I don’t fancy my chances of finding a decent set of Dirt Dawgs!!

Yeah I’ll be sure to share! Monkeyshred did a 91 Apex build on YouTube and mine will be very similar for this one as I’m taking it back to close to original with a M650 DX groupset I’ve pieced together. I was very lucky to get this red with black tiger stripe frameset, plus original bars, Tbone stem, pedals, headset and original Avenir wheels for £22.50 delivered it’s got paint chips but love it (for that price who wouldn’t)
