1991 Alpinestars Ti-Mega - The update 23-01-12

Posting a thread such as this was always going to result in some of the replies above due to the unlikely prospect of it actually being directly related to a fault of the couriers.

For the benefit of the doubters though I would wholeheartedly say, having met both the members involved, neither the Seller nor the Buyer is trying to 'pull a fast one' in this case; and the frame certainly wasn't showing any evidence of the damage at this years Mayhem.

Good luck to you both and I hope it resolves itself satisfactorily...

Looks like flex inwards of the frame from the dropouts, whether when tightening up the wheel normally or courier damage or whatever, that's then played on a stress raiser at the weld, which has then given way.

Gutting for all concerned

Fixable by a decent Ti welder but limited role afterwards :(

Beautiful bike that deserves saving, most definately.

 This isn't pretty at all...

Shame really too because the bike is beautiful..

Could you possibly get the crack welded and a sleeve placed arounb both dropouts? Sort of likt how you'd tape a wrist but with Ti,

Just a full Ti layer around a little of the Dropout Seat and Chainstays.. It wouldn't be cheap but it'd give that bike a few more years I'd think.

Fortunately for both parties, a side impact on the shipping box that carried sufficient force to crack the frame would certainly have marred the cardboard quite a bit. Post up a pic of the box, as it arrived. I'm sure the shipper will require the same as proof that the crack occured in transit.

I recently had a bike arrive with a rear dropout poking out the side of the box. I refused to sign for it until the shipper documented the damage on the delivery log. It certainly sucked, but at least it was just a bent steel hanger.

Wow, I go away for new years, for a couple of days and the thread turns into a minefield.

The ONLY fact here is the frame is cracked. Everything else is conjecture IMHO.

I think it's safe to say both Mark and I are gutted at this, and I took 24hrs to post the thread, as I wanted it to become a histroical story, as I believe (like all the other build threads) this is the start of the journey.
