1990

Purple KTM hat? must be 1990.

1990 I was living in northern Ontario (where the men were men, and the women drove 4x4s), literally right beside a wildlife sanctuary with miles and miles of trails. Drove a Jeep Comanche w. off-road package. A KTM 250 E-XC and a Husqvarna 500 CR.Would have had at least one of a rotating stable of RZ 350s in the shed. A Peugeot PX-10 and Raleigh Chill, neither of which I can find pics of.

1990 - a nice bachelor flat in central Edinburgh, a Range Rover, a 1340 Mini, a Triumph Herald Convertible - worked too much overtime to pay for it all but still managed to go out every weekend drinking and chatting up the ladies, Skiing Holidays at least twice a season and lots of takeaways.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>fast forward >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

2 marriages been and gone, 3 kids, single parenthood, House outside edinburgh, some bikes, Merc V220 (for kids and bikes),no commuting (3 mins by bike :D ), changed career, earning just enough (most months) but chilled, content and almost blissfully stress free :D :D :D

Was in my 2nd year of secondry school in the year above Edd (Brocklanders023) and found another new friend in the name of Graham (beavis) nowt changed there then  :D
Got my first MTB a brand new 23" Raleigh Montage, way to big but mum said I would grow in to it .

Fast forward a few years.
Married for nearly 8 years with our first child on the way (due on the 9th of Dec) :D

Same friends also. :D

I was 24 and living in a flat with my mate that made Men Behaving Badly look like a monastery.

Driving a Lancia Delta that I loved until I got a price for a new clutch. Traded it in for a Lancia Prisma.

Riding a road bike I'd built myself that was totally unsuitable for Edinburgh streets and cobbles, fast as but spent a lot of cash on getting wheels trued.

Was still freelance in my work in those days and making better money than I have at any time since. Being young none of this was saved and due to the times a huge amount went on partying, drink and recreational drugs.

A good year for brainless no string one night stand with like minded young ladies.

Christ I miss those days :(

1990 was the year I failed my A-levels (3 different schools in 2 years didn't help), but I started again on a BTEC course in Mechanical Engineering at the local college.

The two years spent there probably rate as the happiest of my life. As well as great friends and a cute girlfriend, there just seemed to be a feeling that this was the beginning of the rest of our lives, and it was going to be one big adventure...

Makes you wonder what the hell happened since...

16, at the last year of school, getting heavily into the electronic music scene, deciding between girls and Lego - the Lego won

earning around £250 a week in cash working overtime at a little Tesco

owned a Rover series one SD1 V8 and a Bickerton Mean Green 200GS mtb with XT upgrades and a heavily modded Raleigh Sprint with a close ratio rear cluster, tubs and Mavic bull horns.

I mostly cried a lot too.

1990, I was at secondary school, doing morning & evening paper rounds on an old 5speed Raleigh racing bike, may have had my Claud Butler MTB by then? I dunno, the rave music and other "things" may have clouded my memory a little ;)

I was 11, liked playing football, climbing trees and riding my bike. No idea what the bike was, it was huge, had bullmoose bars and pink flouro grips.

My Italia '90 Panini sticker album was my most prized possession.

Was too busy going to warehouse parties at weekends and recovering most of the week by riding my Giant Escaper round. God awful paint job on it but it rode nice.

In 1990 I was almost responsible, having left Glasgow uni 8 years before:

Mortgage, house in Tunbridge Wells, Company car (Sierra LX  ), first wean on the way and a Border Collie :D
Worked in Forestry Management and landscape construction, spending most time clearing storm damage remaining from 1987 "hurricane"

Motorbike - Z1000J :p
Mountainbike - none
Road bike - Puch Cavalier - went all over N Kent and E Sussex with that.
Fishing Rod - Hardy Invincible
Hobbies - developing a healthy fondness for English Beer
Biggest hassle - unable to go hillwalking/climbing so vowed to move back north of border before I was 40. Made it, eventually, with 8 months to spare ;)
