Freewheel catalogue p*rn!

That front mech is way too high of course ;) and the flat stem looks a bit low?

Ta!

Yep, front mech tossed out of the way to fit the BB/chainset..

No-one on here misses a trick, eh?! Will be perfectly aligned soon don't worry!

Saddle angle adjusted and seatpost lowered, stem raised a bit since the pics were taken too.

It sits a lot lower than my Oranges as it has a shorter headtube, which worries me slightly, but I'll sort the best position out when the bikes fully built up :D

;)

I like this a lot, if I hadn't seen the Raleigh Team in '89/'90 I am currently building, I would be wanting one of these.

You currently have the same dilemma as me with some slack angles and a fairly long and low stem not looking quite right, maybe even a bit gawky, I need to ride mine a bit to see if the position and handling is OK before I decide to paint my stem or change it. Mine seems to have a similar look in riding position to my '89 Courier Comp when they are placed side by side and this in my 2 hour blast a couple of weeks ago was comfortable it's just whether the frame angles make it a bit 'ocean liner' like. Mine originally had a short high rise alloy stem which:
1. looks arse.
2. are even harder to find than the 1" T-bone type.

I assume yours has a 1" stem too being 1990 and it would originally have been a bit shorter/higher?

Carl.

Re: New Build: 1990 Ridgeback 704XT

Yes, 1'' quill stem, Carl.

I could be quite lucky with the stem as I've got the original which came on the 701LX I picked up the other week (currently at the powder coaters) so will probably swap that over when I get it back. The 3ttt stem currently fitted is 135mm in length whereas the original stem was 120mm and of course a bit higher as well.

We'll see when its all set up, but raising the stem height and lowering the sadde has already made a difference :D

Cool....! Would love to find a NOS pair of matching shorts..!

Pedals have arrived this morning - Shimano Deore XT PD-M731 with Mt. Christophe toe clips and straps as per the Ridgeback catalogue image:

Had a comedy moment trying to fit the straps......completely forgot how to do it! :D

Will be the first time I've used clips 'n straps since...ooohh.. 1992 I think...?

Also had a fiddle with the saddle and stem positioning since the pics previously shown - looks a bit better proportioned now but I'm still in favour of nabbing the stem off my 701LX and fitting that instead (the top end models all used the same stem iirc)

Koolstop pads ordered and plumping for my perennial favourite chain, a SRAM PC-870, which has also been ordered..

NEXT STOP --> thumbies please! :D

EDIT 8/8/13:

Original stem sourced (ie swiped off my 701LX and resprayed black!) and SRAM PC-870 chain added (delinked to fit 7spd set-up of course)

3ttt stem was too long so much happier with this shorter stem, looks very well balanced now - saddle height bang on, too

Good point made about the Aztec brake blocks by minor-LEGEND below, went for the Control ones - Koolstops saved for my Prestige...

Love the look of those switchblades, just so right.

My neighbour has the blue and yellow 601LX (from new, i think) but it's in a right old state. I posted an image up of it once on here somewhere.

cracking job so far

Cool build, I think I remember these from the Freewheel catalogue.

Wouldn't Aztec brake blocks be more in-keeping with the Madison vibe?

Re: New Build: 1990 Ridgeback 704XT

Really really REALLY like that! Great thread with nice porno-style close ups of XT sexiness

Looking forward to the final build.
