1990 or 1991 Diamondback Override

Muadib69

Retro Newbie
So I got this for $20 from a local ad. Rusted chain, bad tires, torn saddle, shifters don't work. The frame is in good shape. I like vintage diamondbacks so for $20 why not? I re-packed wheel bearings, bottom bracket, new chain, saddle, grips, cassette, brake pads, and new rear derailleur. The frame is actually very light and it's just a good looking bike overall. I believe this is one of the early stab using 700c wheels on a mountain bike. I still need to install a front and rear racks then I will be done with it.

I do have a similar model an Overdrive from 1991 and love that too.

Also Harry Leary, in the picture of this ad out for a ride with Susan DeMattei seem to like their 700C bikes.

The Overdrive was a bit more expensive and a bit more sporty frame with sloping top tube geometry. It had Panaracer Smoke Tires, similar wide like regular MTBs. So even more a mountain bike just with bigger wheels.
To me, although math doesn't work out (as you need at least a 50x700c size to round the outer diameter to 29"), one of the first 29ers ever (next to Gary Fisher Sphinx).

Not sure if there was a meaningful quality or weight difference between Override and Overdrive?

Does the Override also have clearance for big tires. Does modern and great-riding 700x45 tires fit also to the Override?

Because paint-job-wise the Override models had been at least to me much more attractive.

BTW: also Gravel conversion work nicely with those bikes.

Here is an great looking Override with drop bar and disc brakes
