Er, just like the one pictured, it would go under the straddle cable. Just like the reflector would have.

Hello dyna-ti, following on from your PM, that graphic scheme was introduced in late 1989 (when they print the next years catalogues) and lasted till late 1992, so that’s our window.

I’m not sure when the 400LX was introduced, but it wasn’t in the line-up for 1989 but was on the 1991 Spectre and on the Pagan in 1992, so I’d agree your bike is most likely from 1990.
Another good indicator is of course the date stamps on the Shimano kit… there should be 2 letters stamped/cast on the back of the cranks and the mechs…
