Taken me longer than I thought it would this, but happy with the (near) end product. Just waiting on toeclips and a seemingly elusive yellow Elite bottle cage.

This started as a NOS 21" 89 frame from Orange bought a few months ago, with just a few local areas of paint damage from storage. It was hard to colour match and the existing paint is water-thin, so I'm going to be careful when and where I ride this one.

Build is as near as I can get it - from memory - to the one I used to drool over in Sail Sports in Manley Mere. Turbo saddle, Alesa rims, had to do a 'copy' stalk stem with decals from Gil which are excellent, and mostly DX but with XT hubs, I've some DX hubs i may build in if I can't get over my OCD that you can ride a bike without a matching group. Worse is to come...I have another one to build up with XT that is likely to have DX hubs, lord knows how I'll sleep after doing that one.

This was the bike I really wanted and I ended up with an Alpinestars Cromega instead, which was a great ride but ultimately - not this.

Need to get cracking on the other one now.

Re:

Not to split hairs but the Hot Rod bars are too modern for it. The 89’s had bog standard steel bars that were colour matched to the stem. Swapped my originals back in the early 90’s for the Saracen bars on my 89 Tufftrax after I weighed them both.

Lovely bike btw, a real gem.

Ah yes you are right about the bars, they are off a 93 clockwork donor bike I bought in case a 94 P7 frame (which I got round to buying to replace the cromega all those years ago) in my size ever crops up, and I am such a fan of the Orange imagery and branding that I really like the way the hot rod decals work - so went with them.
My head strugles with it a bit but I justify it to myself by remembering how in those days, buying and swapping out new parts seemed to be comonplace, as better bits and bobs became available. My cromega got a flexstem, powergrips, spds and then pace forks....so figured with this clockwork I would count the out of sync bars as an "upgrade"!
The next build will be a bit worse as its the same age frame but Im likely puting 91 rc35s and m737spds on it. Not sure how my head wil cope with that!
