1989? Raleigh Touriste build.

It all began with this post by London Classic highlighting a frame on eBay being offered for silly money (£16.32)

With it being less than a 30-minute drive from me I was interested. I was almost put off by the title of the thread which specified a 56cm frame which would have been too small for me but looking at the photos the headtube looked larger than it would be for that size, I was hoping it would be 58cm.

So at that price for a 531 frame and fork with canti bosses, in my size (hopefully) I click "Buy It Now" and arranged to pick it up the next morning. The seller had left it on his drive for me so I never met him but apparently, he had stripped the parts for another build and this was what was left.

Here is the frame as it was when I picked it up, it had not been moved from the photo on eBay. Fortunately apart from obvious surface rust it looked quite sound with no dents and to my delight it was 60cm c2t and the top tube was a perfect for me 58cm c2c...result.

Here is the frame with most of the bits stripped off. I couldn't find my crank removal tool for the moment so took this with them still in place but everything came off very easily with no seized threads and obviously no seized stem or seat post to worry about. I popped an appropriate seat post in to check size and condition of inside of tube and it was fine and 27.2mm as expected.

Here is the worst rust, on the non-drive side chain stay. IMG_2243.webp

The Tange headset looks and feels in decent shape

Good old DB 531, but not ST. I like that recessed seat post clamp bolt.

So there it is, I have been pondering what to do with it but will come back later after more thinking about it today.

I have cleaned up the frame and most of it is liveable with in terms of patina (rust) but the chainstays will need some paint. I have taken out the BB and it came out very easily exposing the BB thread in good condition. I have taken out the headset which again is in very good order and has been cleaned regreased and refitted.
I could not resist a quick mock up using the RSX wheels I have, together with the Brooks that I will use and the bars. I have not decided yet whether to go with the STIs or go for downtube shifters. I have some tektro cantis that I will use and that should be it with RSX front and rear mechs.
Oh, and I decided the "RALEIGH" decals were not attractive so they had to go. Sacrilege I know! I think it looks so much better without them though.
