It still makes me laugh to see chainstay brakes, they just look soooo weird!!

All good eh. Why were the brakes ever put down there? I heard rumours that U brakes were 'too strong' to be mounted on the seatstays.... Gotta love the Competition and Mt tam, I remember that even the hookooekoo was out of my price range BITD!

A friend had a blue/ white Montare XT. lost track of it a coupl eof years back. Anyone seen one in the Brighton area since?

Well done for getting this up: I must have spent weeks poring over this BITD.

For me, MTB development reached its zenith in 88 - chainstay ubrakes and all. I think the reasoning for them was indeed because the chainstay was thought to better be able to handle the forces, but its the clean lines aound the seat stay triangle that really do it for me.

Rear cantilever brakes? New fangled voodoo.

Great scans. This is probably my favorite year for Fisher. Regarding the brakes, done for brake performance/stiffness. Charlie Cunningham idea and he did it right on his bikes with appropriate mud guards for the brakes and clearance. The brakes feel great.
