It's been a minute..

But as the saying goes "good things come to those who wait"

I got my frame back yesterday from my welder buddy, I was fortunate enough to watch his amazing work as well (he even had a second welders mask for me to wear).

A little refresh of what he was up against:

A similar crack along the bottom

A choice was made to remove all the bad metal and fabricate a "patch" from a spare chainstay my buddy has possession of. Since leaving Rocky Mountain he'd work in the aerospace industry welding and had made such a repair before successfully.

Below are pictures of the whole process, note the custom bent copper tube used to purge the inside of the chainstay with argon gas which prevents oxidization and maintains corrosion resistance (or so I'm told 😁)

See the "patch" piece sitting on the work bench

After the TIG welding was completed I agreed to complete the filing/sanding myself, I spent a good couple hours and really took my time ensuring to be careful and not remove too much, my buddy feels confident the welds have good/deep penetration.

Chainsuck? What Chainsuck?

I'm hoping to complete my painting plans and build her up in the next 2-3 weeks and hit the trails 😁

Amazing job!

I've been busy :D

The front yellow and red stays were pretty tatty and I couldn't have lived with keeping them as is and simply making a few touch ups.

I'm glad to be keeping the original paint scheme after a lot of thought back and forth last year and like to idea of keeping some of the original paint as well.

The plan has been to save the red original paint in the front triangle and to repaint the rest of front triangle yellow and to repaint the red stays.

This original paint has a few chips and some patina and I've added some minor touch ups.

I completely removed the old paint down to the bare metal on the stays and front portion of the front triangle mostly using stand paper which was lot's of work. I have sprayed the inside of all frame tubes with Fluid Film in an effort to keep any existing rust from getting any worse.

The primer and base coats are done. I'm quite pleased with the chosen red to match the front triangle, it's a pretty good match. After a few days I'll do a bit of wet sanding to smooth out some rough bits and with any luck shoot the SprayMax 2K clear a week from now, weather dependent

Getting closer to the finish line 😁
