Thanks, I'd seen the front mech but the frame hasn't arrived yet and I want to check the diameter first as I may need a 31.8 or an endless band type.

I think I've secured some hubs from New Zealand but eBay has run dry at the mo... Could really do with some help on the front mech and brakes - thanks

Question... I've downloaded the 1988 Suntour brochure and the XC9000 front mech only came in Ø28mm or Ø28.6mm (see pic), I've also found a picture of an '87 SM800 with an XC9000 front mech. So can I assume that a 28.6 will fit my '87 'dale? I'm thinking that it will probably be ok but...

Houston, we have a problem…. I bought clockd’s XC9000 hubs which came all the way from New Zealand and the lock nut to lock nut width on the rear hub is 126mm and the distance between the drop-outs on my SM500 frame is 135mm :roll: . Looking at the Suntour catalogue the rear hub was available in 126mm or 130mm, so I’m going to put a post up in the wanted section for a QR axle and spaces and see if that will work. Any thoughts? I'm guessing the Suntour thread is the same as a Shimano one (although I haven't tested it) as I need to use some of the parts currently on the Suntour axle (to fit into the cartridge bearings).

All this is suggesting to me that not all ’87 SM frames are the same. I’m thinking that the Suntour equipped frames (SM900 & SM800) would have had narrower stays than the Sansin and Maillard equipped (SM600, SM500 & SM400) models as there are a few Shimano equipped bikes out there and that's 135mm.

No luck with the front mech yet.

What!!!!! 135mm ? It must be a later frame.

Those are pretty good hubs and you should be able to space them out on a new axle, if not you can send them back to me and I will refund you.

No worries, I like a challenge! At least when it’s done I’ll know more about these bike than I did when I started… It's definitely an ’87 frame; just need an Suntour expect to help out!

The saga continues... I've bought a 146mm axle and some 3mm washers and I think the configuration in the picture will work but I really need a rim to lace the hub to in order to confirm.

With this modification I'm guessing I can go with a 6 speed freewheel (WP-6000) rather than a 5spd as the freewheel spacing is around 36mm, which would be great as these seem to be a little more easy to find.

However, the next problem to solve is the roller cams...
