1986 Ritchey Ultra

Here are some of the parts that will eventually go on it. I might need a better U-brake. I'll decide later. It will go on the chainstays so mostly out of sight. Also no need to put excessive wear and tear on a really good one with it being on the bottom of the bike.

That's an XT U-brake - wasn't that specc'ed on the bike and top end in the Shimano U-brake world?

In 86 it would have had a roller cam brake. The U-brake is more practical. I plan to use one. The brake I have is very sun faded. I'll probably still use it. It will just look a little out of place on a restored frame.

I'm not building it to spec, but here is the spec sheetView attachment 933409
I didn't see Ultras in the store until the late 80's and those were spec'ed with that beautiful XT 730 groupset. I'm really surprised they used a roller cam on the bottom - the only production bike I recall seeing them on was a late 80's Lava Dome I test rode. I didn't appreciate that roller cam brakes and u-brakes were interchangeable - always thought they were their own thing. Does a roller cam provide any more tire clearance because the U-II is a real pain to fit a 2.1 inch tire into.

I had a 91 Zaskar (I sold it in November) it was a tight squeeze to get the tire in the U-brake. I agree. I would deflate the tire before moving it in or out of the frame then re-inflate. I've never used a roller cam so I don't really know. That Suntour brake is more money and less practical.
