A 22 mile classic of Mid-Wales madness, this was the second time that the MVH allowed cyclists.
US legends Joe Murray, Roy Rivers and Jaqui Phelan raced along with UK riders Matt Mills, Mike Newton, Chris Tatton, Tim Greenland, Andy Pegg, Friend Wood, Vince Edwards etc.
My friend Dudley White came in 6th of the bikers, not bad for a 16 yr old ex-BMXer from Kent...I rode, was DQ-ed from the results because I didn't have a helmet, but finished around 2:50.
Everything was about to change as the World Class cyclocross guys such as Tim Gould, Gary Foord and David Baker would soon enter the sport and blow all us casual amateurs out of the water...
Gould was the first to beat the horses in 1989, by 3 minutes. Soon after but cyclists were stopped from competing as parts of the course are on footpaths, so not allowed.
The event began in 1980 and is still run today for runners and horses.
All the best,
