1986 Brodie (115)

After a period of being super occupied with no time to spend on bikes, I got an e-mail alert while making dinner for the family.

A new Craigslist ad of a crusty hoard of bikes… I had a sec inmy dinner prep and scanned the ad, pretty quickly something popped out!

I definitely did not want, nor could I accommodate the entire pile… but I reached out, he dug the bike I desired out of the pile and I made my way there after dinner.
I didn’t know immediately what I was looking at in the ad but was pretty certain it was an early-ish Brodie… turns out I was right. And he was right in his advertising that it was crusty!
They have a day out in Ladner where everyone sticks their unwanted belongings on the roadside and the city comes along and collects them. The fellow with this pile was in the habit of going and “saving” any bikes that looked decent or usable… this being one of them.

Anyways consider myself shocked to see serial number 115!
Paul Brodie started out at Rocky Mountain in 1984 and built 113 frames under their roof through May 1986.
In July 1986 out on his own in his own workshop (a few blocks from where I currently live), he built his first bike under his new companies name “Brodie” that first bike was serial number 114.
This bike being 115, number 2!

I did do a quick tear down of the bike and started to scrub some mold, grime, crust off of the frame set.
Initially the driveside BB cup and stem weren’t cooperating so I left them to finesse out when time was on my side.

Luckily with little effort the BB cup and the stem popped out, no problem!
The fork even cleaned up quite nicely!
Now I’ll just dedicate a bit of time to cleaning up the frame/fork/stem, addressing any spots of corrosion, and absolutely maintaining the original paint & patina.

Oh yah, and thanks to Woodsie a screenshot from the Romax series of videos by Paul shows the beginning of Pauls notebook on Brodie serial numbers!

This frame 115 being July 4th 1986, 18.5” and listed as “Trials” Paul has commented that it should be sporting a 73 degree headtube! Should be interesting to give it a spin!

A bit more cleaning, a lot of time wasted searching for a spare Shimano 600 headset I know I have… as I couldn’t locate it I went with a similar yet slightly older Dura-Ace model.
Starting to hang a few parts off of it now, it’s nice to build a bike with the wear and patina of this one as I don’t have to feel like each part is cleaned and polished to its fullest potential!
