Bike Recyclery
Dirt Disciple
Finally getting around to cleaning up the Montello! It has an interesting story. The original owner (who I bought it from) owned a bike shop in the northeast in the 1980's. He bought this bike at the 1984 NYC Bike Show. Two days later, he received a call from Campagnolo stating that they were not supposed to sell this bike, as that was the very first time the C-Record group had been shown to the industry. Of course, he said "tough luck". He never sold the bike, likely due to it's exorbitant price. He says it sat in his basement all this time. He recently moved to Colorado Springs, and decided to sell off the rest of his inventory to me. This was among it. The frame definitely has some chips from improper storage, but the components show almost zero use. Even the rim brake tracks are perfect.
The big mystery of this bike is the top tube decal that should say "Mod. Montello" actually says "Mod Super Star". Google comes up with nothing on this. It looks as it could have been an aftermarket decal as they're poorly placed, but the shop owner says they're original. The serial number on the BB is 0819 if this is of any help.
I'm torn on what exactly to do with it. The absolute minimum will be a strip, deep clean,, new period-correct or original tires/cables/housing, decal to replace the one torn "Record Strada" rim decal sticker, new SLX frame sticker, and wax. I'm tempted to find someone to touch up the paint chips though. Has anyone had experience having a frame touched up without a full repaint?
