I've seen quite a few Enigma bikes at "The Freewheel" cycle cafe in Dargate. Lovely looking bikes, but they all had a metallic finish.

Geoff Roberts, sometimes runs framebuilding courses at Enigma, he also builds superb frames from his own workshop.

Cyclists - back in the day - who lived on the south coast would likely travel up to Surrey to shops such as Geoffrey Butler, Allin or Roberts, or off the peg frames from (for example) Holdsworth.

thanks for all the input so far guys. i have the frame in front of me now. the serial number under the bb is hard to make out but i think it is as follows;

could be;
