1960 cyclo cross North East

Fantastic video! Cyclo-cross as it used to be! Wes Clayton, the winner, passed away quite recently I think. He was a top rider in the North-East for many years in several disciplines.

Lots of riders on fixed wheel, including the winner. Water crossings like those in the film are not allowed in CX now - what a pity! For the spectators that is  I can remember riding a couple of events with rivers - but not that bad.

The commentary is really funny. You have to watch it to appreciate - especially the bit about the referee

When the 'Jonathon Noble Memorial Cyclo-Cross' at Temple Newsam used to be run at the eastern side of the house (between the farm & Bullerthorpe Lane), it used to cross a little stream that ran from the ornamental lake

I also think that the cross at 'Oakwell Hall' (Batley) used to traverse a stream on an older course too??
