100mm modern sus forks and E-stay frames?

I seem to have the urge to do a modern rebuild and I’m thinking of putting some modern forks say some 100mm fox floats on to a old e-stay frame, I’m not sure exactly what frame as yet as it all a bit pie in the sky at the moment.

What are your thoughts on this idea, any body done this or have any pictures? Or should I just forget it?

Cheers Brian

If that's what floats your boat then just do it...

...there are many who will say you shouldn't because it will mess up the geometry and thus the steering, but if Chas Roberts says it's okay to put a 100mm travel fork on one of his early 90's frames then I know who I'd be more inclined to listen to ;)

If it were a road bike being ridden on billiard table-smooth Tarmac then yes, you're going to notice a difference in steering and stability (slower and better...), but off road where you spend half the time out of the saddle...

...nah!

Also, a modern fork will be set up with quite a bit of sag, which will compensate somewhat for the extra length.

Suck it and see, only you will know if you like it ;)

Back in 2000 I put some Judy SL air's on my 94 DB axis. That came with Manitou 3, 2inch, put in the long travel kit, 2.5inch, then some EFC's, 3inch, all fine, but when I put the Judies on, 4inch, it was very crappy. It made it slower in the steering, but most noticeable was it lifter the front up really high. So you got the bad position on the bike with the bonus of slow steering. Got them rebuilt at 3 inch, fine...well as fine as this forks could be anyway.

You won't know till you try it, but my money is on it being average at best.

I have 100mm Reba's on my '97 Saracen Kili frame and if I am honest it rides just fine. Sure its not an e-stay, but the 'old frame geometry cant take a longer than 80mm fork' argument is the same for both.

Like Stevo said, suck it and see, you can always change them out ;)

(Got a charge spoon on it now too, which looks a lot better)

I am intending to do this on an Alpinestars (as soon as the BB is out). I won't go for 100mm as I think that'd be too extreme. I have 80mm Fox on my 1995 DBR, so I'll try 80mm on this - sinnett177 put an 80mm fork on his Cro-Mega if I recall correctly.

I've got some 85mm Magura Menja's waiting to go on my Funk frame so will be interesting.

At the end of the day it's your bike so within reason put whatever you like on it, if you think it looks or feels crap, change it... if you like it, bonus!
