Not just party but a pie habit; he seemed always to use the early season to shed a few kilos.

They reckoned he used the first week of the tour to shed a few kilos and as it went on he got better.
Back then the tour tended to start with either sprint stages or the 250km affairs for small breaks to have a go so he was able to ride himself in

Sad news, he was a boyhood 'hero' of mine - and we share the same birthday 20th December. He would have been 91 tomorrow.
