£350 in 1991 = £750 now

I recently got this off of eBay for £25 in an auction! Two other people bid, but clearly didn’t think it was worth much! The rear tyre is only half worn and the chain <0.75% so it hasn’t been used much.

I like the new Zaskars and was thinking of one but read in a review that the cables rattle.
I've only taken mine out twice now. No rattles yet. I read the same in a review. When assembling the bike I zip tied the cables together where they come out near the bottom bracket. In my opinion the weak point of the bike is the Rockshox 35 RL Gold fork. But that's expected at this price point. 20250308_110257.webp

I was also interested in a Ritchey P-29er or a Yo Eddy 29er but both of those are far more expensive. I think the Zaskar scratches the same itch.

Bikes nowadays definitely offer more value, mostly due to omnipresent Far East production and materials that allow easier production automatisation compared to thin boutique steel.

If some perceive bikes are now more expensive is because goalposts have moved, and since the top model now costs 12k, the logic says that the 5k model is "middle class" or that Deore/105 is entry level...

I wouldn't object to owning one of those new Zarkars as they're better looking than my 2011 Zaskar Sport (which I only bough as it was cheap, donated to the bike project I volunteer for) and it was a GT..
It's has weird shaped tubes compared to the 90's models which I think makes it look cheaper than it should be. The only original parts left on this bike are the derailleurs, semi integrated headset and the MBUK chainstay protector!
