    First Ever Steel/Other Bike Owned

My first bike was a Raleigh Record, shortly to be replaced by a Raleigh Record Ace when I was sixteen years old. I loved the RRA and put many thousands of miles on it. IIRC I paid £220 for it in 1981 from Lawes Cycles in Northampton, sadly I don't still have the original one but do have one...

Wanted Shimano XTR FD M950 Top pull down swing 28.6

Thanks, we had a brilliant day. I'll check with a couple of friends to see if they can help you out but I feel it'll be unlikely.

Had a look this morning and unfortunately only have an XT the same as you already have ... Good luck with your search.

Wanted Shimano XTR FD M950 Top pull down swing 28.6

Think I've got one but as I'm getting married today it probably wouldn't be a good idea sorting through my parts drawers! I'll get back to you in a few days if you aren't sorted by then 😊

    1984 Overburys Connoisseur Build

That's a pity, can you not just replace the crank? If you don't want to I know a good home for the rings 😉

Thanks Paul. As History Man has said, start a thread! Would love to see your rebuild progress and your take on what completes your bike 😊

I did indeed, complete with (non-retro) stainless steel vacuum bottles....

Rebuild all but finished and out this morning for a 10 mile shake down ride. It's a lovely ride especially for a touring bike, very responsive when you up the pace, but still a smooth and comfortable ride. Everything seems to be adjusted correctly, just waiting on some Jim Blackburn bottle...

Thanks singlemalt. Hoping to get it finished for next weekend and get out on it then. Just hoping the weather holds ... I'm loathed to get it filthy just yet!

The rebuild with period parts progressed nicely today. I've fitted the Suntour Cyclone rear mech, Suntour 14-28 freewheel, wheels are Weinmann concave rims on Campagnolo hubs... Stronglight 99 bis triple chainset ( 28,38,48 ) SR SP-100AL pedals, Suntour Mountech front derailleur, Christophe...

Well the stitching of the leather wraps went well, actually much easier than I thought. Just need to wait a few days for the leather to dry before trimming and inserting the bar end plugs.

The frame is back from Argos Racing Cycles in Bristol. Quite a quick turn round time of 4 weeks. I have to say I'm extremely happy with the results, it's my first respray & was really nervous about the colours I'd chosen (Verde Aqua and Oyster White for the headtube and downtube panel) I think...

From what I remember they were a sponsor of the team in the late '70's ... I may be incorrect though.

Picked up a very nice condition Stronglight 99 bis triple for a very reasonable price, 28,38,48 rings. It had French pedal threads which I've had converted to English for £10 by George Hall Cycles in Market Harborough in the time it took me to go for coffee and a cake!
