Now that is a great story - but otoh I am wondering if anybody would have noticed…

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

It gets even better. Murnau is the place I will be moving to next month.. that bike seems to be something of a portend. So this bike might return to its birthplace.

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

Fun fact. In the German news article the guy said he had the idea for the first German bike magazine while working at a bike shop in the resort town of Garmisch in 1987. Where he saw the u.s. soldiers stationed there bringing their bikes with them. This incidentally is the town where I work...

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

The real question is: this is the European answer to which question exactly? But they were astonishingly expensive bikes I have to say.

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

Guys, Thanks for all this input. What I can say is that on initial inspection there are no obvious issues with the tubes or lugs. The bike seems to have spent its previous years in a garage and was used for riding to the pub. I just found it interesting with its raw look and the Neon yellow...

    My first Klein!

Sometimes you get lucky. I found my Marin Team issue in a classified … saying “2 Mtb, one Marin” When I saw the pictures I had to rub my eyes… and got a bit late to work that day :)

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

Long Story short: I could not help myself but pick it up… let’s see how the frame looks after it’s polished. And if it is meh it still comes with some nice xt parts :), a girvin stem and some crazy wheels (pulsar anyone?) But I still have no idea what this actually is. Here in Germany we had a...

No rhyme no reason just 1 Retrobike pic per post.

After disassembly… the left crank and the seat post was stuck - you can’t win all the battles. On this one I gave up

    Bar ends yay or nay?

There were some quite nasty looking ones, I have to say - e.g. the long ones with an almost 90 degree curve. The more adventurous riders mount them pointed towards them, for a more upright riding position :o

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Especially with the old bikes I find them extremely positive. Using them on a rigid fork bike with a narrow handlebar the ride feel comes rather close to a road bike. To me these were the first proper gravel bikes. The bar ends are comfy and remind me of riding “in the hoods”. On the other hand...

Turn the frown upside down! Retro goldmine!

I could not say it any better way. This is the nicest online community I’ve ever been part of. Lots of very committed people, helpful comments. I’ve learned a lot from reading old posts. And it is always fun just browsing the forums I can’t compare it to social media, as I do not use them...

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

So nothing to fear riding it after 30 odd years, right?

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

A bit more googling makes me think it might be an Alan or a Hercules titanal frame. They did not have the best reputation longevity wise though. Otoh it still seems to come in one piece.:)

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

Now that you mention it, the seat stay does have a certain Giant vibe to it… Thanks for pointing this out

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

I’ve never seen this on an all aluminium bike - rather with carbon or titanium tubes, which those aren’t. I wonder if the bonding still holds. Otoh it might look great when it’s polished .

What bike is this - lugged aluminium frame ?

Saw this frame today… being a proper retro bike nerd I keep wondering what on earth this is. It looks like an aluminium frame, but also like being built from single tubes and joint pieces, with a distinctive seatstay. Anyone knows what this is? Cheers

    Specialized M2 Info Thread/Serial Registry

Great thread, thanks - and greetings from Bavaria… So my Comp is a 98 model. Never knew where the serial no was. Thank you for this info. I also never knew that the m2 models were such special things. To me it seemed that’s what Specialized called their aluminium frames. And while I gravitate...

    Show us your Specialized

That‘s my m2 stumpjumper in its natural habitat. Replaced the rear derailleur with an Stx model - which optically goes well with the original crank.

    1995 Roberts DOGS BOLX Team

Thanks for the history. Where I live we have a few local shops/brands. Maxx, Corratec and Ralph Denk (rdr) come to mind. They all make nice bikes. Idk if they are known in the UK. But collectible they are not.
