So I've tried to learn more about square tapper cranks and the specific bottom brackets they require, in order to get a single chainring in the front and a 9 speed cassette in the back. I believe 9speed with the M735 rear derailleur isn't the problem. And putting a 9s cassette on my 8s hup also...

Thank's so much Andy! This basically seals its fate as I was naively hoping to have made a bargain. Even as a beater-bike I would probably want a more "special" bike and upgrading this with better parts won't do it.

After doom scrolling though the Google picture search, I hope someone here might tell me what kind of Raleigh this is. I bought it for 10€ and my brother in law picked it up, my plan for this is a get-around bike when I'm at my in-laws, so nothing fancy but I still want to make it nice;)
