    Another car question....

My main problem with the Doblo was it's complete inability to travel at more than 60mph ;) That and poor handling and a gear shift that was like stirring a bucket of porridge - I can't fault it's reliability though to be fair, I dropped it into 3rd gear without noticing (apprentice had the...

    Another car question....

"check engine" light being on/not working is an MOT fail now (as I found out to my cost last year)... If you have a friendly MOT place they might plug in their computer thingie and switch it off for the duration though ;) I'm also looking for a car at the moment (unless I get a 3-seat van in...

    Computer help needed

Ok, now I have something to work with... that GTX9800 and X2 processor are (relatively speaking) quite old now - I wouldn't go for the CPU as a possible culprit though - those rarely fail "a bit" :) The graphics card though is a possibility, as is the PSU (assuming all components are of a...

    Computer help needed

Could be anything really, does sound like it might be hardware though. Personally I'd start with by checking every driver is up to date then move onto other diagnostics: Make sure everything is seated properly in its slot on the motherboard - RAM, any add-in cards such as gfx, all power and...

    B***** cotter pins!

I always used to run into problems getting the buggers out (to service/replace crank bearings) - I always bought a new pair before attempting to do anything BB-related... Fitting new ones was kinda therapeutic for me, filing the flats until they fitted just so then drop in, tap and tighten etc...

    Cartridge bearings?

So are Timken (they own what used to be Fafnir, a brand of bearing that the other group of people I hang out with swear by)

    Cartridge bearings?

6200 refers to the bearing size, RZ means it has a single rubber seal and the IBC part (I'm assuming this is a misread on the OP's part?) means it was made by IBC bearings, a German company. 6200-2RS bearings from SKF or NSK would be a drop-in replacement (you can always remove one of the seals...

    Dumb question possibly but...

Part way down this page is a nice table that should answer all of your questions :)

    Optimum straddle length?

There is a point at which you will achieve the best balance and this will depend on your brake setup - it's all about finding the sweet spot in the mechanical advantage curve. Sheldon Brown's site explains this better than I ever could: http://sheldonbrown.com/canti-trad.html and...

    Another one on twitter.....

Times like these that a helmet camera (with audio) would be useful ;) I'm sure plod would love a video of this sort of thing...

    Build a lean to

I was thinking of exactly the same stuff as soon as I read the OP :) I've seen it used mostly for the roofing on conservatories and it does look a lot easier to work with (and seal) than the corrugated stuff. It's also (usually) better UV-stabilised so it'll stay clear for longer.

Freewheel Query and now Axle Query!!! with pics

Re: Freewheel Query Most freewheels (and hubs) you'll come across will have the standard (ISO) threads (a test here would be to try screwing a bottom bracket adjustable cup into the freewheel threads - if it goes in easy then it's ISO). The only other kind of screw-on freewheel I'm aware of is...

My kids RD Tourney is shot, can I use LX RD?

The only Shimano gear that won't work is the 10-speed kit (dyna-sys) as the cable pull ratios changed for those. I'm running an XT (9-speed) rear mech on my wife's 7-speed bike as the Exage one that came with it was worn out.

    Reasonable car tyres

Is there not a place near you that does "part worn" tyres? Other than that, I've always found ATS Euromaster to be pretty reasonable on price in the past - haven't used Kwikfit for anything since they screwed up fitting an exhaust on a Metro I owned about 12 years ago (I had the thing back to...

I like great big fat hot ones

Proper fat chips - preferably cooked in beef dripping served with salt, vinegar (the brown stuff) and a nice fluffy buttered barm cake :D

    Help!! (Broke my Look Fournales)

Good thing about skateboard bushings (and those on quad roller skates for that matter) is that they're cheap and available in various durometers so if the one you have isn't right there'll likely be one harder or softer that will do the trick.

    groupset recommendation ???

If you don't mind something modern I did spot this on ebay... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Saint ... 232dbb42f2 I'm suspicious of the low price though (doesn't come with brakes unfortunately)... You may be better sourcing parts individually though and if you want retro parts I'd...

    Specialized Shark Fin re-manufacture ?

I'll only be able to measure mine when I get back to Wigan (where my bike is!). Someone else may be able to get the measurement before I do (I have a 2000-model FSR with the hole) Assuming you'll need angle too if the hole isn't centred over the dropout?
