Another early 1990s Marin - what year? Look - purple bits!

Thanks for all the helpful replies, much appreciated. The bike will get some TLC - a darn good clean is in order when it isn't so flippin cold outside. Also a re-cabling & remove the hideous rear carrier. Those purple bar ends may have to go, don't like them. This is going to be my main...

As Dad watches from the window, the fruit of his loins pedals...

    89 Pine Mountain

It was reduced in a sale on Dec 31st 1989. Not sure if US spec or what, but definitely gloss grey with rear U brake. Who knows what they were up to eh? Dishwasher.....hmmmm....

    89 Pine Mountain

Not steel, in fact judging by the wear rate they are made of grey cheese - same stuff they use for car exhausts these days. The photo hides all the grot and paint scratches quite well. For some reason my wife isn't keen on me doing the rebuild in the kitchen like last time when I was...

    89 Pine Mountain

You aren't kidding about the chainset. I was desperate... The rings are rivetted on, so the sooner I wear them all out and can replace the lot, the better.

    89 Pine Mountain

Purchased on New Years Eve 1989, my only bike. This used to be light grey with neon orange forks and stem. It also had a U-brake at the bottom bracket once, but when the frame was resprayed purple (what else?) in 93 I had the rear canti pegs put on. Frame, wheels, shifters, derailleurs...

The 'Introduce Yourself Here' thread II

Hi, Been lurking for a bit and posted once or twice so here goes. I live not far from Northampton, aged just 43 (!) and have been riding since school days. Working in London restricts free time a bit. My one and only bike is a Marin Pine Mountain that cost me £479 in 1988 - 20 years old...

    At last, it fits

My bro won this TI Raleigh Creda team jersey in a competition in 1980-something or other and gave it to me. I was always such a skinny little git it used to drown me. But now I'm more of a f4tb4st4rd...it fits! 100 Acrylic, knitted, made by Umbro. Lyrca? Pah!

89 Pine Mountain needs new cassette

Thanks for your replies. Its currently a 7 speed cassette of some sort, definitely a Shimano freehub. I'll try and ID it - means I'll have to clean it now :( 7 speed is fine for me, there's an Evans just up the road that sells 7 speed Hyperglide cassettes for about 15 quid. I can't...

89 Pine Mountain needs new cassette

Greetings and Happy New Year to one and all. I'm new here, but not new to making and breaking bikes, though its been quite a while. I'm still using and abusing my 89 Marin Pine Mountain - its my only bike now. I've had it since new, when it came in light grey with neon orange forks and...
