    How a bicycle is made

Saw this on 'talking pictures' TV but it's on youtube as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaxRQh03BOw All set in the Raleigh factory in 1945 - a real glimpse of a past era. Loved the hub filling chap & tyre fitting ladies. Might watch Saturday Night & Sunday Morning to round things off.

24" or near steel tourer with 700c wheels

Any chance you have a lightweight tourer around 24" - horizontal tt, 700 wheels, m/g eyes 8 speed/deore hubs or maybe 6spd would do. In decent overall condition but don't mind some sorting out. Don't need a heavy duty load lugger, just something for days out. In North Yorks. Thanks if you can...

Sean Yates custom lo-pro in the comic?

Re: Might have been in Cycling plus. I think I saw the frame at the York Rally years ago - chap had a small trade stand. I think it had SY as a stylised head badge. Someone was discussing the mitring of the tubes which might have been lugless brazed/silver soldered. I thought it was steel...

    Asking for help building wheels

How important is a full groupset, to you?

Re: I had a Bob Jackson which came with pretty much this set & it was very well made & functioned without problems. I know some of it was 'bought in' like the brakes (Modolo) & chainset (Ofmega made?) but it never seemed to attract much of a following. Was it one of the first groupsets? - 'Tout...

Recommend me a silver 6sp. chain please

Re: I ended up getting a Wippermann connex 8 speed chain & it has the simplest system I've ever used for making the connection - very impressed. It's so easy I think I'll remove the chain every time I need to give it a thorough clean & just pop it in a bath of diesel.

Recommend me a silver 6sp. chain please

Re: Thanks for that - I'm no good with 9/10 speed stuff & thought that the chain must become narrower to fit into the smaller spacing in the block - is that true of 11 speed?

Recommend me a silver 6sp. chain please

Re: Thanks a lot for the tips. I did find a Wipperman which looked Ok - a bit more expensive but I think they have a good reputation. Will get something ordered before getting the summer bike out in the next week or so.

Recommend me a silver 6sp. chain please

Time for a new block & 3/32 chain so have had a quick look for a silver chain to look smart & match the block & it seems they are now another 'collector's item', priced as though they are actually solid silver. Can anyone recommend an alternative? I'm not that bothered about the period correct...

Honor Blackman & Diana Dors & Bikes ....

Re: Thanks a lot for the reelstreets link Ned - I'd forgotten that website. If you like Diana try & see `Yield to the Night' which is pretty heavy going but shows she had more to offer as an actress than the obvious glamour.

Honor Blackman & Diana Dors & Bikes ....

'A boy a girl & a bike' filmed in 1947 is on today (Sun 10th Feb) on Talking Pictures @ 5.20 (328 on our telly). Simple little tale about trouble in a Yorks town & the local cycling club. Some lovely location shots & the above ladies to hold your interest. Worth recording for another view.

Early Eddy Merckx identification and Campagnolo parts id

Looks similar to my own Merckx which is maybe 82/3 - The very early frames gave EMerckx as a signature engraved on the seat stays see 2nd link - bit later have the EM logo. Mine has the {EM}. You should be able to find some refs to De Rosa being either heavily involved or actually the builder...

    1953 Tour of Britain

Re: Hello - yes we were sure it was John Laurie - he must have had a fascinating life from The 39 steps to Dad's army! I didn`t know the roads apart from Holme Moss, which they seem to have done the `wrong way` & Bishop Burton near Beverley (where there was a pond) on the way to York. I liked...
