    Vintage tracker Frankenbike tribute build

Brazing in a fire, forks frozen in an acid bath, what´s next? Shooting deer for a new saddle skin? Threads like this are really the spice of retrobike, thanks for sharing!

    Mafac canti brakes

Found these while window shopping, so it seems like there were anodized versions: https://chillin-chillin.com/items/609bc24ef3c5e74069550aa3

Totally understand your preference for a steel frame. I´d also think that a Flaremax could be a good choice, but that really depends on what you´re planning to ride. I bought the Superlight thinking it was enough coming from fully rigid bikes. In hindsight maybe I should have bought a Heckler...

    New bike recommendations wanted

Sure is a nice bike, but weight is excessive for a short travel trailbike IMHO. The Pinkbike review stated the whole bike as 16.9kg, that´s DH rig territory. I´m contradicting myself a bit as I stated above that weight is not a big deal, but this bike weighs 2kg more than the full on Enduro...

Help w/ rim suggestions for 1989 Wicked build

There was also the even wider Mavic M281 (and predecessor Rando M5), but with all these wider rims (M261, RM25) you´ll struggle to find them NOS as they were quickly getting out of fashion at the start of the 90s. Making that task nearly impossible is to find them in 32h variety. These rims were...

    New bike recommendations wanted

I was doing a lot of reading lately, but the fundamentals did not really change in the last 10 years (last time I was really "into it") Horst Link type back ends are smooth and provide a largely de- coupled rear brake (suspension does not firm up during braking) Single pivot feels more...

    New bike recommendations wanted

I´m in a similar situation after a test ride of an Orange Stage 6 Evo (150/140 travel) a friend put me on after I complained that the trails here are quite sketchy to ride on my current "modern" bike, a 2013 Santa Cruz Superlight (120/100 travel). While the bike´s travel and geometry certainly...

what was something you used to think was crap but now you quite like it?

Skinwall tires. I used to hate them BITD, they looked soo old, like from grandpa´s bike. Now just 1/4 of my fleet has blackwalls.

    1989 Rock Mountain Blizzard Slope

Can confirm: I had seatpost slippage after I changed the QR on one of my bikes. XT back on, problem gone. They may be portly but very effective.

    1989 Rock Mountain Blizzard Slope

Ha, I know what you mean. I´ve recently changed a full set of those for Hügi ones (not particularly ligthweight themselves) and was a bit perplexed how heavy the XT ones were in comparison. But ...they look so right!

Yeti FRO Pro, Accu-Trax, ATAC, Answer Manitou

Oh, not to be misunderstood, I can appreciate a freshly restored bike, it´s just that I noticed that I drive such a bike far to less. The "beaters" get a lot more excercise. (And yeah, at least online I bet there are less Yetis FROs in original paint than there are repainted ones).

Yeti FRO Pro, Accu-Trax, ATAC, Answer Manitou

Loving this, especially the few scars it has while still being presentable. Makes it really stand out in a sea of blingend out FRO´s (that are far too seldom used as intended). I´d throw a well loved 730 gruppo on it and ride the wheels off of it!!

    What. Did. You. Do?

Never mind the pea soup paint, but what about the seat tube? Never seen a Salsa frame like this, is that a repair when the post was stuck?

    1989 Rock Mountain Blizzard Slope

Experimenting sounds good, part of the fun figuring how to get the best results! I can´t really comment on the white you chose being ok for the Rocky. I was working on a C´dale and was just perplexed that the "pure" white I tried first was really standing out against the original colour. I...

    1989 Rock Mountain Blizzard Slope

Maybe to get more grip on the back for pedaling and more on the front for braking. At least that´s what we were doing with some of the directional tire profiles BITD. Edit: Looking at the pics though it looks backwards from how I would have guessed🧐

    1991 Marin Team Titanium

Yep that´s looking very good, and I´m usually not bored by catalogue builds. But most Ti builds just go for the clean colourless Merlin look, the neon front end mixes things up nicely. Oh and yes to silver chainring bolts!

    1989 Rock Mountain Blizzard Slope

Great score, especially since it´s so original. Yeah it´s a little worn, but it´s in good hands for a sympthetic resto! Regarding the granite parts of paintjob: It looks like the white spots were sprayed on with a toothbrush? By that I mean running your thumb over the saturated bristles. And...
