Cook Bros Stem in 1 1/4 real or fake?

I was going to say that the mitering on the quill side suspiciously looks like the way Salsa did it. Thanks for clearing that up (and the anecdotes)!

Cook Bros Stem in 1 1/4 real or fake?

Hi Jack, can you comment on the CB marked steel stem I posted above? I can´t find any reference to this style of stem being an original.

Cook Bros Stem in 1 1/4 real or fake?

Wasn´t there a steel Cook Bros stem? I seem to remember others in that style, but none with a pass through brake cable. This one seems similar, but according to https://secondspincycles.com/1986-yeti-fro-xr309/ it´s not a Cook stem. These would be pre 1990, so a stem in 1 1/4" size would...

    WTF are these drop-bar bikes?!?

Were they around in 1985? The ebay auction where I found a better pic claimes is from the 1985 NF catalogue https://www.ebay.com/itm/275897105018 Here´s the (straightened out) pic from the auction:

    WTF are these drop-bar bikes?!?

    - Edit: found a better resolution pic of the ad - Indeed the dropouts look like they could be the scalloped ones Potts uses. I was wondering what the head badge/sticker on the other bike is. Because of the lugged crown I was thinking early Moots or Mountain Goat, but neither of the logos...

    1989 Rock Mountain Blizzard Slope

Congrats on the refinish, did you find the 2K easier to use than normal cans? I´d give it a few days to cure. To check if it´s hard enough I always do a fingernail scratch test on an inconspicous place. Ok hard to see with clearcoat, maybe with a flashlight? If it leaves traces, it´s not cured...

Refinishing black seatposts (Steel, XT, XTR)

Yeah painting it would not last too long I´d guess. The original finish is likely black oxide. Technically only possible on steel with nickel, ie stainless, but the term is also used for blueing "normal" steel. The industrial process is hard to replicate on a hobby level, but there are several...

    Sold 1988 OFF-road toad sold

Dang, now that is something. Any more info about the history of the bike? (Disclosure: Just curious. Although the right size, I´m neither geographically nor financially in a position to seriously consider a purchase).

Why do we want rare, complicated stuff?! Amp forks kupput

I was going to say that it´s not that expensive to get a custom spring made. No idea what the spring rate might be though.

    Answer hyperlite vs easton hyperlite/ea70

Bikepro is still working for me? http://www.bikepro.com/products/handlebars/answer.shtml Maybe check your browser config, some only allow visiting websites beginning with https:// I also thought the (solely) Easton branded bars were much later than the Hyperlite ones. Especially the one in...

Why do we want rare, complicated stuff?! Amp forks kupput

Don´t fret about it too much, it just comes with fiddling with old parts and who knows when it last was ridden. The spring may also be considered a wear item. At least it is relatively easy to replace and it didn´t break while riding, damaging something (or someone!) else. I think AMP spare...

    1993 Fat Chance Yo Eddy

Liked for the resto project, not the rot in the seat tube :( Glad you have someone to fix it. Does he (she?) replace the whole tube or splice in a new section? No drain hole in the BB shell so it trapped water/condensation, especially if you rode in inclement weather and put it away wet. Also...

    A Shimano M730/32XT hubs question. 6spd or 7spd on a 130mm rear spacing?

Just to be clear, you can not fit a 7sp HG cassette on a 730 (6sp) hub without modification. The freewheel may have the same width, but Shimano made one of the alignment teeth a little bit wider to make sure the older hub is not compatible with the newer HG cassette. Of course you can file the...

    1989 Roberts Phantom

Wow, that has turned out lovely, superb colour combo (I love green bikes). Somehow even the snowflake front wheel doesn´t bother me (too much).

    A Shimano M730/32XT hubs question. 6spd or 7spd on a 130mm rear spacing?

The 732 hub was available in 130 or 135 rear spacing. The hub body of the former is about 3-5mm (can´t remember exactly) narrower, but you can run it in a 135mm configuration with a longer axle and additional spacers if needs must (I did this with a black hub for a while until I found a matching...

The grim reaper came to visit me, Roberts content, be strong...

Liked for the beautiful bike, not for the crack. I´ve also had one of my bikes for 30+ years and I would totally do the same and try to save it. Seems like you will be able to get hold of a former builder though, that´s a big plus!

Stunning! And good thinking to keep the OG parts (wish I had the foresight BITD). Hope you also kept the zebra lycras 😝

Replica Ritchey Z Max- seems like we´ve been heard!

Thanks for coming back to us, I wish I were wrong. I mean I bumble along my cheapo tires just fine on the bike they´re on. But I´ve just finished a build with a reasonably lightweight wheelset (with OG Farmer Johns @700g) and man is it nice to have the snappy response when accellarating.
