Rat Bike Build - GT Palomar

Love it! That frame effect looks brilliant.

    2000 Marin East Peak build

Now *that* is a serious bargain!

    2000 Marin East Peak build

Hmm, that's odd, I always thought the various full sus models shared the same frame, but mine is definitely a 30.0mm seat post, as are a couple of others I've come across. The lower end Shoreline Trail came with a steel swing arm, but again I always thought the front triangle was identical to...

    2000 Marin East Peak build

I've got u turn rebas on mine, so have played around with different travel lengths a lot. I like mine best at 85mm travel, which is about 465mm axle to crown fork height. Any higher I feel lifts the BB to the point where it negatively impacts handling. If I could get a decent 100mm travel fork...

    2000 Marin East Peak build

That looks awesome, love it! How does it ride? Looks like nice scenery too, where abouts did you go? I reckon on moorland cross country type rides, they totally hold their own against modern bikes.

    2000 Marin East Peak build

Great work! From the nice brake rotor and XT qr skewer, I'm now really looking forward to seeing how this one turns out!

    2000 Marin Mount Vision Build

Cheers! I'm really pleased with how it's turned out, looking forward to the spring when it'll get used for some cross country rides after work! I didn't protect the frame, but the finish is still pretty darn good. I never got to a high polish in the first place, so the fact that it dulled a...

    The unicorn bike paradox

Here's my unicorn - a 2008 Marin Quake. It felt like an unobtainable bike for me not (just) because of the cost, or the comparative rarity of the gold paint job models, but also because I never thought I'd be capable of riding the sort of trails the bike is intended for. Got one last year...

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Hmm, hadn't thought of going that way. The seat post does go up and down a lot, I wonder how long a black one would stay looking nice. I'm sad enough that I might not have to mock this up in a photo to see how it looks 😂 If it wasn't a 27.2mm post, I'd probably be looking for a dropper post...

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Now, a serious question: Does it need a silver stem?

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Cold out today, but at least the worst of the mud is frozen! Been really enjoying this bike. I was in two minds about doing such a drastic overhaul for fear of losing some of its retro charm. But it's still managed to keep a retro 90s MTB in riding character while being capable enough that...

2000 Marin east peak, help needed

My 2000 mount vision is definitely a 30.0mm. I'm pretty sure the seat clamp is the same size as on my more common 31.6mm seat post GT frame, but can't remember exactly what that is.

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Just popped on some better brakes and a SRAM 3x9 drivetrain (thumbies are cool, but trigger shifters are nice to use on the trails), and raised the bars a smidge. It rides really nicely, dead pleased with it.

    26" full length mudguards

Just fitted some Zefal Trail 65 mudguards to my Marin. Running 26x2.3 front and 26x2.1 rear, and they give decent clearance. Protection is not perfect, but they certainly make wet muddy riding a lot more pleasant. Straightforward to fit, and seem pretty solid on the trails so far.

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Really pleased with how it's turned out. The mudguards especially impressed me with how much drier they kept me, and the mechanical disc brakes were also much better than I'd feared, allowing one finger braking with no problems. Riding familiar trails with an unfamiliarly rigid fork was a...

    Ultimate retro mud-plugger?

Here's mine - 1997 Marin hawk hill. I added a rear disc brake adapter, disc (rigid) fork and mudguards, and it's good for riding in terrible conditions and not worrying about too much. I don't get on with SS in my local terrain at all, day I'm running 3x8 drivetrain - cheap to replace and...

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Thanks for those - looks like you did a bit more modifying than I needed to in the end. I did have to remove the mudguard/rack mount on the dropout to get things to work so it doesn't have the additional fixing screw, which is a shame, but now it's all together I'm pretty confident in it.

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Hmmmm... A thought... What are people's experience with full length mudguards ridden in anger off road? Is it possible to set them up so they keep you dry when riding through your typical trail puddles at speed? Can't really see how they would, but if this is possible that could be worth...
