Marin Mount Vision Tour of Dartmoor

A few years ago now, I built up a year 2000 Marin Mount Vision - build thread here: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/2000-marin-mount-vision-build.400588/ It's a lovely bike to ride, and to me, is aesthetically one of the most iconic of the late 90s cross-country full suspension designs...

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Out again today 😎 Absolutely loving this build at the moment! It's still wet enough here that it's seen plenty of use, on rides where mudguards and low maintenance trump a suspension fork. It's one of those bikes that just feels "right" when you hop on.

Gary Fisher Ziggurat 1998 - trash or treasure?

Nice! Those purple grips could grow on me...

    1996 Marin Ultimate Titanium

Solid choice, they'll look ace and are really nice pedals to ride

    1996 Marin Ultimate Titanium

That's a toughie. I like the chrome a lot, but do you reckon it'll tie in nicely with the finish on other parts? The oil slick isn't to my tastes but will certainly make it look a properly updated / "modern" build if that's what you're going for. The silver you just can't go wrong with IMO...

    1996 Marin Ultimate Titanium

Silver for me if you're actually intending to ride it in anger off-road. Anything else gets scratched up pretty fast on rocks! Though I do kind of like the look of a properly battered set of black pedals...

Wow! This is going to be quite special!

    2000 Scott Boulder rebuild.

Looking good! From the state of the grips, brake blocks, and chain rings it doesn't look like it's seen many miles. Might even be able to get change out of that tenner!

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Near Llandudno, on the northern edge of Snowdonia (which is one of my favourite places in the UK)

1997 Marin Hawk Hill restomod - not one for the purists!

Mostly quite tame but very pretty trails today, but did enjoy slithering down a very steep rocky section that reminded me how much easier it all is on a modern squishy bike!

Cool, looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

Gary Fisher Ziggurat 1998 - trash or treasure?

I think it should be fine. The down tube mostly takes force under tension rather than compression, so a small dent wouldn't worry me much, as any creases are effectively being pulled out rather than folded over when under force. The only big exception to this would be a direct head on collision...

Rat Bike Build - GT Palomar

That STP does look lovely, and thanks for the offer! I think I'm probably after something a little more retro and a little more cheap & cheerful (dare I say it, something it wouldn't be sacriligeous to hold over a camp fire!). It's embarassing enough being out-ridden by all the teenagers without...

Rat Bike Build - GT Palomar

Has to be done I think! I'm currently riding a dirt jump bike on my local pump tracks / skate parks, and while it's great when I've got it there, the ridiculous little 10" seat tube and SS gear makes it a proper drag riding to/from the good spots. At 5'9" I've been thinking a 15"/16" seat tube...

Rat Bike Build - GT Palomar

If I could 180 & manual that clean I'd be dead chuffed, the extra couple of inches of seat tube doesn't look like it's holding you back! Must be nice being and to ride around with the saddle at a decent height too. Definitely the coolest build I've seen on here for a bit!

Rat Bike Build - GT Palomar

That is smashing! Are you riding it in anger at the skatepark? If so, how do you get on with the long (well, compared to a dirt jumper!) seat tube? I'm kind of tempted to build something like this for my local pump tracks / skateparks, but not sure the longer seat tube wouldn't scupper it a...
