XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

Doing the math front capacity is 46-26=20t which is in spec. for GS and SGS. The rear 11-34 capacity is 23t which ijust over spec. but by about the 2t left over form the front. But the total is 20t+23T=43t. This is a bit beyond even the SGS m950 series 38t listed capacity. Out of reach for the...

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

I'll get a photo up tomorrow. Here's a page on the XTR RD-M950 http://www.bikepro.com/products/shimano_tables/shim_rder_table.html You'll notice that the GS has 33t total capacity 22t front difference, and 11-32t cassette so in 2x MTB it would be 12 t difference in front with 21t in the rear In...

Help me decide, XTR confusion !!

The Shimano 10/11s derailleurs ended up using the same cable pull as SRAM 1:1 shifters, so retrofit SRAM X series shifters for 8/9s. This gets some gripshifter options that Shimano didn't offer.

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

Thanks for the context on that. I guess if no steering is involved it wouldn't matter much.

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

In post#1656 showing the bike with the compound gearing, in all photos the fork appears to be installed backwards. I wonder if this is explained at all in the French newspaper article? This is a common defect here in the US on new bikes assembled at big box stores by clueless stock clerks. I...

Avid BB7s in the modern world.

I'm hearing on MTBR that Shimano rotors sourced form China instead of japan are stamped instead of laser cut and not being as flat don't work nearly as well. I haven't experience this myself/ But I would ask a vendor about this. This is not just the Icetech versions., solid steel rotors have the...

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

Rene HERSE (RIP) Cycles has moved to the US and will build you a brand new "vintage" French randonneur. Gravel racing is the test bed for their products. I'm not suggesting that any Retro bikers should resort to this. But RH does publish a lot of articles on the thinking and design behind this...

    7 speed freewheel upgrade options.

Hub motor Ebikes still use the English threaded freewheel format. There are wider range, and higher gear count freewheels available due to this. 7,8,9 speeds and ranges up to 11-34t range...

    Twist grip thoughts/advice

8,9, and 10 speed all used different size spacers between the sprockets. Also the small cog wraps around the end of the freehub, so the cassette will be loose if you remove that one. Some guys play that game with mid drive Ebikes. Remove a middle cog or 2, and swap it to the rear to maintain...

    Twist grip thoughts/advice

Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Gear Calculator is always worth a visit when considering gear swaps. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gear-calc.html For gear units enter MPH or KPH @ 90RPM. This is kind of a standard cadence for discussing these things. But many casual riders will never spin that fast so...

    Twist grip thoughts/advice

There are a lot of options for 1x and gripshifter. 8-11 speed can all be done. Shimano Revoshifters kind of ended at 8 speed. SRAM 8-11s are readily available. SRAM 1:1 derailleurs and SRAM 1:1 gripshifter all work 8-11s. There were some SRAM Rocket, and Attack gripshifters for Shimano 2:1...

Retro Mavic hubs HG11 freehub to 11 speed cassette.

If you have an old set of Mavic MTB whhels, or their hubs that required a spacer behind Shimano 8/9 speed cassettes, you already have an HG11 Freehub ( IDK if Mavic road stuff is the same or not?) Now Shimano road, and MTB 11 speed hubs are different. Road uses the wider HG11 spline freehub, but...

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

Cage size usually doesn't matter. But with some newer derailleurs being able to run up to 11-51t cassettes (40t range) some short cage SS can't handle that any more. 11-40t =29t range and that's about the limit for SS cage derailleurs. The common MTB GS mid cage is probably OK for 1x drivelines...

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

Another option would have been an 11-28 cassette.

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

I'm running a mid cage XTR on my 1500W (converted 2004 Gary Fisher Solstice) Ebike. So it's been thoroughly tested. 11-40t cassette. To do this a longer B screw is needed. Chain length must be just right. Too short and the extra loop on the derailleur cage can get stuck behind the cassette. I...

Avid BB7s in the modern world.

Here are a couple links to the Icetech pages. https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/technologies/component/details/ice-technologies-freeza.html https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/technologies/component/details/ice-technologies.html The Icetech rotors are easier to bend than other rotors, but easier to...

Please help - 2002 Shimano Deore LX Rapidfire SL

I would say that bike probably came with a 48t chain ring. if you get a 48x104BCD ring you should be OK. I've run 48t with a 32t mid ring and it shifted just fine. I did bump the small cog up to 28t, but it might not have been needed. Touring sets came with 48t back in the day, but MTBs went to...

Avid BB7s in the modern world.

When setting up the cables (any cables) on BB7s you want zero slack in the cable. The brake lever and caliper arm should both move as one. This helps keep rattles out of the brake levers when not in use. Once you have this don't use the barrel nut adjuster at the leverss again. Do all wear...
